About The Position

This full-time position is a dual role, with 0.5 FTE dedicated to the Clinical Nurse Educator - Department Based role, focusing on ongoing staff development and nursing education, and 0.4 FTE in the RN role supporting unit staffing in Medical-Surgical on 5N. The Clinical Nurse Educator - Department Based is a nurse with prior clinical experience who may or may not have previous educational experience, and whose primary focus is staff development and nursing education. Reporting to the Director of Nursing Professional Development and Practice and working in collaboration with the unit manager, this role elevates professional nursing practice by developing, coaching, and mentoring nursing staff. They also maintain clinical proficiency by providing direct patient care, precepting, and delivering bedside “just-in-time” education to nursing staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in nursing required or Diploma Degree in Nursing and Bachelor’s Degree in Health-Related Field.
  • Current Professional Nursing Licensure in the State of Illinois.
  • Current nursing specialty certification; if no specialty nursing certification, certification required within one year of assuming role.
  • Current Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support and/or Neonatal Resuscitation as applicable to role.
  • At least five years of clinical experience in a medical center, hospital environment or academic setting.
  • Adult learner knowledge and expertise.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Flexibility in work schedule.
  • Able to effectively interact with colleagues and all members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to engage in dialogue with diverse healthcare audiences.
  • Commitment to teamwork; ability to work with others to set and accomplish goals through collaboration and coordination.
  • Possesses presentation skills necessary to provide education to audiences.
  • Commitment to continued personal professional development as evidenced by attendance at seminars, conferences, maintaining specialty certification, etc.
  • Proficiency in a variety of computer programs (Microsoft Office – Word, Power Point, Excel).
  • Proficiency with computers and virtual meeting platforms.
  • Ability to conduct literature searches to investigate best practices, evidence-based practices, and/or research studies.
  • Proficiency with Electronic Medical Record.

Responsibilities

  • Providing direct patient care.
  • Acting as a clinical resource to staff; maintaining visibility in the clinical environment for just-in-time learning facilitation and/or assisting in providing direct patient care.
  • Flexibility in scheduling to accommodate providing educational activities at various times of the day and various days of the week.
  • Serving as a clinical mentor and role model for new and existing staff.
  • Collaborating with Clinical Nurse Manager to assess education and performance needs of staff.
  • Serving as a resource to Clinical Managers/Clinical Coordinators in defining education and performance needs of staff.
  • Supporting the role transition, role integration, skill acquisition and mastery as nursing staff advance from novice to expert.
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of unit/service line/area based competency requirements for nurses and patient care technicians.
  • Facilitating the onboarding of employees to ensure integration to the role on both unit and system-wide levels, focusing on retention and growth for licensed and unlicensed team members.
  • Managing education and training processes/activities to foster learning using strategies that engage learners in critical inquiry, critical thinking, problem solving, and foster the development of competence in learners.
  • Precepting registered nurses new to the department.
  • Mentoring and evaluating preceptors to enhance learning experiences for all new hires.
  • Evaluating orientation and onboarding experiences to ensure newly hired team members are prepared to practice safely and independently.
  • Organizing and acting as a resource for on-unit in-services for new products, equipment, policies/procedures/practice.
  • In collaboration with Clinical Nurse Manager, partnering with staff to lead unit council development and participation in shared decision-making councils.
  • Partnering with Clinical Nurse Manager to drive unit safety, quality outcomes and patient experience.
  • Promoting a positive and professional climate and providing resources for learning that facilitate the life-long learning process.
  • Supporting and promoting specialty certification preparation.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of effective communication principles and promoting communication among disciplines.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
