About The Position

This role is responsible for overseeing daily operations, patient flow, human resources, team leadership, quality, safety, compliance, and financial/strategic management within a clinical unit. The Clinical Manager will direct unit traffic, manage bed allocation, assign staff based on patient acuity, and oversee discharge planning to improve efficiency and patient outcomes. Leadership responsibilities include staff scheduling, conflict resolution, identifying training needs, and conducting performance reviews. The manager must ensure audit readiness, investigate incidents, monitor infection control protocols, and address patient experience feedback. Financial duties involve managing budgets, approving equipment orders, monitoring waste, and controlling labor costs. The role also contributes to strategic growth initiatives.

Requirements

  • Typically 3–5 years of clinical experience, often in a hospital or leadership role.
  • Expert knowledge of Electronic Health Records (EHR) and healthcare management software.

Nice To Haves

  • PA/NP or a Master's degree (preferred) or a Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration or Nursing (MHA, MBA, or MSN).
  • Certified Clinical Manager (CCM) or Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM) credentials.

Responsibilities

  • Directing unit traffic to prevent bottlenecks and long wait times.
  • Coordinating with the ER and ICU to ensure rapid patient placement.
  • Assigning staff based on patient acuity.
  • Meeting with social workers to ensure safe, timely patient exits, focusing on Length of Stay and documentation improvement to improve the Case Mix Index.
  • Managing 24/7 staff scheduling, including call-outs and holiday coverage.
  • Mediating disputes between medical staff or between staff and families.
  • Identifying training gaps and organizing in-service education sessions.
  • Setting annual goals and conducting formal reviews for nurses and techs.
  • Ensuring the unit is always prepared for surprise Joint Commission inspections.
  • Reviewing near misses or patient falls to create prevention plans.
  • Monitoring strict adherence to hand-hygiene and sterile procedure protocols.
  • Reviewing HCAHPS scores and addressing patient complaints directly.
  • Explaining department budget variances.
  • Approving high-cost medical equipment orders and monitoring waste.
  • Assisting the Department Chair in planning for new service lines or unit expansions.
  • Monitoring overtime usage and balancing the use of expensive travel nurses.
