Position Summary We are seeking a skilled, detail-oriented, and NYS-licensed Cytogenetics Technologist to join our clinical laboratory team. This specialized role focuses exclusively on constitutional and prenatal diagnostic testing. You will work alongside other technologists, to perform cell culture, chromosome analysis, and molecular cytogenetics on human biological specimens (primarily amniotic fluid, CVS, POC, and peripheral blood). Because prenatal testing is highly time-sensitive, working effectively within a collaborative, team-oriented environment is critical to our success. Furthermore, because prenatal specimens are precious and irreplaceable, maintaining impeccable aseptic techniques to prevent culture contamination is an absolute requirement of this position. Your technical expertise and strong teamwork will directly contribute to the timely, accurate identification of congenital disorders and prenatal genetic abnormalities.

Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree in Medical Technology or any other health science related field
  • New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist from New York Education Department

Nice To Haves

  • At least 2 years experience as a Laboratory Technologist
  • ASCP certification
  • Cell culture expertise with hands-on experience handling prenatal specimens and constitutional specimens with strict adherence to aseptic protocols.
  • Prenatal and Constitutional FISH proficiency for rapid prenatal screening (aneuploidy panels) and microdeletion syndromes.
  • Proficiency with automated karyotyping and FISH imaging systems.
  • Working knowledge of current ISCN (International System for Human Cytogenomic Nomenclature) guidelines regarding constitutional anomalies.

Responsibilities

  • Specimen Processing: Jointly manage the receipt, verification, accessioning, and preparation of constitutional and prenatal clinical specimens with laboratory staff.
  • Cell Culture & Harvesting: Set up, maintain, and harvest long-term and short-term tissue cultures using strict sterile techniques, coordinating bench space and incubator use with team members.
  • Slide Preparation & Staining: Prepare high-quality slides and perform G-banding methods optimized for constitutional samples.
  • Microscopic Analysis & Karyotyping: Analyze metaphase spreads using manual microscopy and automated digital imaging software.
  • Team Communication & Support: Actively participate in lab meetings, rotation handovers, and troubleshooting sessions. Support colleagues during high-volume periods or staffing shortages.
  • Collaborative Case Management: Work seamlessly with team members to hand off, cross-check, and expedite time-sensitive prenatal cases to ensure target turnaround times are met.
  • Quality Control & Compliance: Perform routine instrument calibration and quality control metrics. Maintain strict adherence to NYSDOH, CLIA, CAP, and OSHA regulations.
