About The Position

LabCorp is seeking a Cytogenetics Technologist Trainee to join our team in RTP, NC. This role involves performing routine procedures for Prenatal samples, including setting up and maintaining cultures, harvesting, slide making, banding, automated karyotyping, reagent preparation, and FISH processing. The technologist will also determine specimen acceptability, monitor and troubleshoot instrumentation, prepare and test new reagents, report test results, and perform preventive maintenance and quality control. Maintaining a safe work environment and replenishing supplies are also key responsibilities. New graduates are welcome as full training is provided.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a Chemical or Biological science, Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Proficient with computers
  • High level of attention detail along with strong communication and organizational skills
  • Must be able to pass a standardized color vision screen
  • Flexibility to work overtime or other shifts depending on business needs

Nice To Haves

  • 3 months or more of clinical laboratory testing experience
  • ASCP or AMT certification
  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems is a plus
  • In lieu of education requirements listed above, non-traditional degrees with applicable science credits that meet CLIA standards may meet education requirements

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine procedures for Prenatal (amniocentesis, Chorionic villus, Products of conception) samples including setting and maintaining in-situ cultures, harvesting, slide making and banding, automated karyotyping, reagent preparation, and FISH processing, probing, and scoping.
  • Determine the acceptability of specimens for testing according to established criteria
  • Perform routine and complex technical procedures and functions according to departmental Standard Operating Procedures
  • Monitor, operate and troubleshoot instrumentation to ensure proper functionality
  • Demonstrate the ability to make technical decisions regarding testing and problem solving.
  • Prepare, test and evaluate new reagents or controls
  • Report accurate and timely test results in order to deliver quality patient care
  • Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control procedures
  • Identify and replenish testing bench supplies as necessary
  • Assist with processing of specimens when needed
  • Maintain a safe work environment and wear appropriate personal protective equipment
