About The Position

Labcorp is seeking a Cytogenetics Technologist to join the Integrated Genetics Cytogenetics team at its Durham, North Carolina facility. The department uses scientific techniques including specimen culturing, slide preparation, and chromosome analysis. The technologist will participate in Labcorp’s in-house training program for Cytogenetics. The work schedule is Tuesday through Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The role performs routine and complex laboratory procedures, supports specimen processing, ensures accurate and timely test results, and helps maintain quality, instrumentation, supplies, and a safe work environment.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a chemical or biological science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or Medical Technology.
At least 1 year of clinical laboratory testing experience, or a bachelor’s degree in Cytogenetics, or an MLS degree.
Understanding of laboratory operations, policies, and procedures.
Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
Computer proficiency and familiarity with laboratory information systems.
Strong attention to detail, communication, and organizational skills.
Ability to handle the physical requirements of the position.
Ability to pass a standardized color blindness test.
Flexibility to work overtime or other shifts depending on business needs.

Nice To Haves

At least 3 months of clinical laboratory testing experience in cytogenetics/FISH.
National Credentialing Agency (NCA) certification in Cytogenetics (CLSp-CG).
ASCP or AMT certification.
Experience working in a high-volume laboratory environment.
Non-traditional degrees with applicable science credits meeting CLIA standards may satisfy the education requirements.

Responsibilities

Perform routine procedures including tissue culture, harvesting, slide making and banding, automated karyotyping, reagent preparation, and FISH processing, probing, and scoping.
Determine specimen acceptability for testing according to established criteria.
Perform routine and complex technical procedures and functions according to departmental Standard Operating Procedures.
Monitor, operate, and troubleshoot instrumentation to ensure proper functionality.
Make technical decisions regarding testing and problem solving.
Prepare, test, and evaluate new reagents or controls.
Report accurate and timely test results to support quality patient care.
Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control procedures.
Identify and replenish testing bench supplies as necessary.
Assist with specimen processing when needed.
Maintain a safe work environment and wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
