About The Position

This is a full-time position with the Department of Corrections Behavioral Health Team. The South Dakota Department of Corrections is responsible for the management of the state adult prison system, the state adult parole system, and the state juvenile corrections system. This includes juveniles committed to the Department of Corrections and placed in residential out-of-home placement, as well as youth that have completed their correctional placement and are on supervised release known as aftercare. The primary mission of the South Dakota Department of Corrections is to protect the public by providing safe and secure incarceration, effective community supervision, and evidence-based rehabilitation programs. The department strives to empower offenders to make positive changes, reduce recidivism, and facilitate their successful reintegration into society. We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Clinical Laboratory Technician to join our healthcare team in a challenging yet rewarding clinical setting within the South Dakota State Penitentiary. As a Clinical Laboratory Technician our facility, you will play a vital role in providing essential medical services to incarcerated individuals while maintaining a safe and secure environment.

Requirements

  • Current phlebotomy certification from a recognized certifying agency (e.g., ASCP, AMT).
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Successful completion of a phlebotomy training program from an accredited institution.
  • Proficiency in venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques.
  • Strong understanding of infection control protocols and safety measures.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to handle challenging situations with empathy and professionalism.
  • Comfortable working in a secure correctional facility environment.
  • Detail-oriented and capable of maintaining accurate records.
  • Must pass background checks and security clearance required by the correctional facility.
  • Knowledge of: safe laboratory procedures; phlebotomy; methods, materials, equipment, and techniques of laboratory testing and analysis; reagent and media preparation; laboratory equipment, procedures, operation, and terminology.
  • Ability to: follow detailed directions and instructions; interpret subject matter; perform mathematical computations; maintain accurate laboratory records; use and maintain laboratory equipment; perform laboratory tests; review test results; communicate information clearly and concisely; establish and maintain effective relationships with coworkers and patients.
  • The SD DOC is committed to a work environment free from illegal drugs and alcohol. All job offers are contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation, urine drug screen and the candidate's ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Individuals selected for the position must successfully complete CPR to AHA guidelines - this includes successful completion of the practical/hands on portion as well as the written exam.
  • Selected individuals must possess the physical ability to successfully complete the practical self-defense exam, which involves the following: lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist; stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down; use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows; withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows; rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic; get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions.
  • Additionally, TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipunctures and capillary punctures on a diverse population of incarcerated individuals in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
  • Accurately label and process collected specimens for laboratory testing.
  • Maintain meticulous records of collected specimens and patient information.
  • Monitor patients for any adverse reactions during and after blood collection.
  • Adhere to infection control and safety guidelines to ensure a clean and sterile work environment.
  • Collaborate with the medical team to ensure proper patient identification and sample integrity.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of phlebotomy techniques and best practices.
