About The Position

The UW Medicine - Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology (DLMP) in Seattle, WA has a fantastic opportunity for a Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT) 1 with the Molecular Microbiology Team at the Renton Central Laboratory. The Molecular Microbiology Lab has been offering broad-range detection of bacteria, AFB, and fungi for UW Medicine patients and beyond for more than two decades. Providers from all over the United States send precious specimens to our laboratory. We have a very lively and talented group of MLSs and Clinical Laboratory Technicians (CLTs) who work as a team to deliver timely test results. We stay at the cutting edge of molecular technology as we routinely launch new tests and improve our current ones. The CLT 1 orders and receives lab supplies, logs in specimens when required, and dilutes and prepares lab reagents by mixing reagents according to protocol. At a semi-technical level, this role performs simple laboratory testing and/or prepares specimens for testing. This role supports Medical Laboratory Scientists, faculty, and students and communicates courteously and clearly with hospital and laboratory staff to resolve problems. Additionally, this role establishes and maintains a positive attitude toward self, others, and the workplace.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent AND one (1) year of chemical, clinical, or public health laboratory experience OR Completion of a laboratory assistant course approved by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
  • Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

Responsibilities

  • Orders and receives lab supplies and keeps the laboratory stocked optimally.
  • Cleans and maintains refrigerators.
  • Cuts fixed specimens (FFPE) and coordinates shipping specimens back.
  • Logs in specimens when required.
  • Under general supervision, performs simple and qualitative clinical laboratory tests and set up specimens for laboratory tests and other laboratory work.
  • Prepares master mixes for PCR and QCs performance.
  • Aliquot bulk reagents into usable volume.
  • Exhibits a working knowledge of the laboratory information system software and uses it to log in specimens.
  • Uses Molecular database (MAD) to enter data and print worksheets.
  • Understands quality control requirements and follows policies to validate results.
  • Works independently to manage average workloads and knows when to request assistance in case of heavier workloads.
  • Maintains clean work area which includes cleaning reusable plastic ware.
  • Performs work accurately and precisely and recognizes, corrects and documents errors when they occur.
  • Interacts with health care providers in a professional manner.
  • Assists with the evaluation of new tests/equipment and research projects as required.
  • Instructs new employees, medical laboratory students, medical students, residents and fellows in routine procedures and is patient and tolerant with them.
  • Performs other duties to support the clinical laboratory as assigned.
