About The Position

The laboratory scientist is responsible for performing patient testing, encompassing the pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases. This role requires adherence to CLIA'88 minimum qualifications and involves executing a variety of microscopic, molecular, chemical, and bacteriological tests. The scientist will also provide guidance to Providers on pre-test requirements, answer testing-related questions, assess result validity, maintain proper records, and finalize test reporting. Ensuring that testing methods comply with established quality control procedures and assisting in the preparation of laboratory reports are key duties. Additionally, the Clinical Laboratory Scientist is responsible for organizing and maintaining reagents and equipment, performing equipment maintenance, and ensuring the laboratory is clean and organized. They will utilize the laboratory information system (LIS) for data entry, report generation, and retrieving test results for physicians. Established safety and quality of patient care protocols will be followed.

Requirements

Possess a current license issued by the state of California for Laboratory scientist (Medical Technologist), as generalist or special license for any of the laboratory’s sub-specialties such as molecular.
In-depth knowledge of molecular platforms and laboratory quality control best practices.
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in medical technology.
Minimum of one (1) year experience in a high complexity laboratory.
At least six (6) months direct hands-on bench work in area or specialty for which he/she is being recruited.
Advance knowledge in area or specialty for which he/she is being recruited.
Problem-solving skills to troubleshoot equipment issues and determine potential causes of inaccurate test results.
Fluent written and spoken English language.
Ability to closely read instructions; Advanced ability in understanding Standard Operating Procedures general protocols.
Attention to detail.
Ability to set up and carry out quality control programs for laboratory operations.
Ability to set up, use, and maintain laboratory equipment.
Ability to prepare technical reports, records, and papers related to the work & specialty.
Ability to work efficiently with current laboratory equipment & resources.
Exceptional problem-solving and critical-thinking skills; and ability to provide recommendations to laboratory technical supervisor to improve test conditions & efficiency.
Ability to lift objects not exceeding 20 pounds.
Ability to multitask.
Ability to follow biohazard guidelines.
Scientist MUST be able to keep his/her State of California license active and current.
Able to work independently in an efficient and within the requirements State & federal compliance laws and guidelines.

ASCP certification is recommended but not mandatory requirement.

Responsibilities

Perform patient testing across pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases.
Execute standardized microscopic, molecular, chemical, and bacteriological tests.
Counsel Providers on pre-test requirements and answer testing-related questions.
Assess the validity of obtained results.
Preserve proper records of test results.
Finalize reporting of test results.
Ensure testing methods follow established quality control procedures.
Assist with the preparation of laboratory reports.
Organize and maintain reagents and equipment.
Perform maintenance on laboratory equipment.
Keep the laboratory in a clean and organized condition.
Utilize the laboratory information system (LIS) for data entry, report generation, and retrieving test results.
Follow established protocols and procedures for safety and quality of patient care.
Read procedures and complete required training before performing any procedures or protocols.
Ensure the confidentiality of patient information throughout all phases of laboratory testing.
Ensure specimens are matched to order requisitions.
Maintain an adequate supply of all reagents and consumables.
Date reagents and supplies upon receipt.
Monitor inventory for expiration dates.
Discard expired reagents and supplies.
Perform and document routine daily, weekly, monthly, and periodic maintenance and function checks on instruments.
Perform calibration and calibration verification.
Perform Quality Control as required.
Identify problems that may adversely affect patient test results and apply corrective action.
Perform Proficiency Testing and/or Split Sample analysis.
Ensure the retention of records of all analytic activities.
Report patient test results by electronic transmission or manual entry into LIS.
Verify accuracy of test results prior to releasing reports.
Verify critical values by repeat analysis, if possible.
Report critical values to the physician or specified nurse.
Correct detected reporting errors by following established protocol.
Perform all Quality Assessment activities assigned to this position.
Retain records of training & competency evaluations, patient reports, errors, notifications, and corrective actions.
