About The Position

This position is for a Clinical Laboratory Scientist at Rumford Hospital, part of Central Maine Healthcare. Central Maine Healthcare is an integrated healthcare delivery system serving 400,000 people in central, western, and Midcoastal Maine, with facilities including Central Maine Medical Center, Bridgton Hospital, and Rumford Hospital. The system also supports Central Maine Medical Group, the Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute, a regional trauma program, LifeFlight of Maine's southern Maine base, and the Central Maine Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in chemical, physical, biological health science or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution, or other educational requirements stated in CLIA (42 CFR 493.1423).
  • Current and Valid State License if the laboratory is located in a state where required.

Nice To Haves

  • ASCP certification, or equivalent, preferred.
  • One year hospital laboratory work experience preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform waived, moderate, or highly complex tests authorized by CLIA, as per CFR § 493.1425 and § 493.1495, with a skill level commensurate with education, training, experience, and technical abilities.
  • Adhere to laboratory procedures for collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results.
  • Follow established quality control policies and procedures, documenting corrective actions when test systems deviate from performance specifications.
  • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance and either correct them or immediately notify a supervisor, Director, or Medical Director.
  • Perform a wide variety of laboratory procedures requiring independent judgment using manual and automated methods in Hematology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, Immunology, and other introduced disciplines.
  • Perform and document routine maintenance (daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed) on instruments and equipment.
  • Review the accuracy of patient results prior to releasing or reporting.
  • Recognize age-specific differences in expected results for newborns to geriatrics.
  • Ensure proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples and prohibit collaboration with other laboratories before reporting results.
  • May be required to perform venipuncture or capillary puncture on various age groups from newborn to geriatrics.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to all department and hospital policies and procedures related to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and human resources.
  • May be assigned as Lead Tech in the absence of a supervisor, taking responsibility for the section or department during their shift.
  • May be assigned responsibilities related to LIS and/or POCT.
  • Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned by the department manager/director.
