About The Position

Axle is seeking a Clinical Laboratory Scientist to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supporting the Clinical Center (CC) located in Bethesda, MD. This role will independently provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the National Institutes of Health/Clinical Center/Department of Transfusion Medicine/Infectious Diseases Section.

Requirements

• Accredited clinical laboratory training program in laboratory science
• BS MT (CLS) certification or equivalent preferred
• Bachelor’s degree in chemical, biological, clinical, or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution is required.
• Experience in performing Molecular based testing and Serology testing required
• Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills
• Strong communications skills, both oral and written
• Proficiency with Microsoft office products

Nice To Haves

• Minimum of three (3) years in a clinical diagnostic laboratory environment is preferred

Responsibilities

• Perform laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
• Manage quality control, including detection of reagent problems, equipment malfunction or need to replace reagents; identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results; correct problem; notify staff.
• Maintain laboratory equipment, including cleaning, running validations, and inspections.
• Ensure compliance with all aspects of laboratory safety and QC/QA/QI policies and procedures; document all quality control activities, instrument calibrations and maintenance performed.
• Organize daily workload, order reagents and supplies required for specialty testing for equipment and supply contracts.
• Ensure compliance with accrediting and inspections agency requirements.
• Document completion of required training and competencies.
• Monitor operational procedures in technical environments to ensure conformance to standards.
• Interpret research or operational data.
• Record research or operational data.
• Operate, calibrate and maintain equipment such as Cobas Amplipreptaqman, Cobas 6800, Ortho 3600, microplate washer reader and able to troubleshoot malfunctions.
• Monitor inventory of reagents and supplies required for the specialty testing for equipment and supply contracts.
• Provide technical experience needed to assist in studying the basic principles of plant and animal life.
• Develop and maintain liaisons and effective working relations with groups and individuals, agencies, and the public to encourage cooperative management strategies or to develop information and interpret findings.
• Perform DNA/RNA purification and quantitation, and real-time PCR utilizing automated instrumentation such as COBAS Amplipreptaqman; COBAS 6800.
• Accurately perform Automated testing procedures for Serology based testing for infectious diseases such as Ortho 3600.
• Organize daily workload based on priorities, rotation schedule and needs of the laboratory and patients.
• Assist with performing basic laboratory experiments and procedures.
• Independently analyze and discuss the interpretation, reliability, and validity of test data.
• Use a wide variety of laboratory information systems, statistical methods and computer programs to collect, organize, and analyze data for reporting of verified results.
• Accurately perform accessioning, specimen processing and test performance of moderate to high complexity tests.
• Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results; resolve problems or notify staff; document all corrective actions taken.
• Communicate and consult with pertinent medical personnel regarding collection procedures; troubleshoot any problems with the specimen or documentation.
• Document all QC activities, instrument calibrations and maintenance performed and identify, investigate and notify supervisor of any problems or discrepancies identified.
• Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures when test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
• Ensure compliance with accrediting and inspections agency requirements, participating in activities associated with the laboratory accreditation process.
• Maintain records that demonstrate proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
• Follow the Clinical Center, Department and Laboratory established Safety policies and procedures.
• Prepare, organize and maintain various lab samples, supplies, and equipment.
• Learn new laboratory techniques and procedures.
• Program and use computers to store, process, and analyze data.
