Clinical Laboratory Scientist - Per Diem
About The Position
City of Hope is hiring a Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Generalist, for its Core Laboratory, covering chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, coagulation, and microbiology. This is a per diem position with variable evening and night shifts, including every other weekend on nights. Evening hours are 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.; night hours are 10:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. Initial training may take place on evening shifts and may last 4–6 weeks in chemistry and hematology. Hours and shifts may vary based on operational and patient needs. The successful candidate prepares and processes biological specimens using universal precautions, performs manual, semi-automated, and automated laboratory procedures, and completes complex tests according to protocols, schedules, and established turnaround times. The role also performs quality control activities, including preventive maintenance, calibrations, and review of controls, and supports quality assurance and performance improvement efforts. Candidates may be considered for CLS I or CLS II depending on experience. The stated hourly per diem rates are $62.982 for CLS I (0–2 years of CLS experience) and $69.2866 for CLS II (2 or more years of CLS experience).
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree; military applicants without a bachelor’s degree may be considered with approval of CDPH-LFS (California Department of Public Health – Laboratory Field Services).

Responsibilities
- Prepare and process biological specimens for clinical analyses using universal precautions.
- Maintain proficiency in manual, semi-automated, and automated procedures.
- Perform complex laboratory tests and procedures according to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules.
- Complete procedures within established turnaround times.
- Perform quality control procedures, including preventive maintenance, calibrations, and review of controls.
- Record quality control data on appropriate forms.
- Support and participate in quality assurance efforts and the performance improvement process.
