About The Position

Clinical laboratory scientists perform complex laboratory tests on blood, bodily fluids, and tissue samples to help diagnose and treat diseases. They are responsible for the analysis of laboratory specimens and subsequent result reporting according to laboratory protocol and procedures. This role may require extended duty and on-call responsibilities. The CLS III acts as a lead in daily duties, including QC management, department operations, and inventory supply, and must be proficient in all laboratory departments.

Requirements

  • B.S. or B.A in Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science or equivalent.
  • Minimum 5-7 years experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in a licensed and accredited Acute Care Facility.
  • Current Clinical Laboratory Scientist license from the State of California Department of Health Services.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to effectively provide customer service to all customers.
  • Proficiency in all laboratory departments.
  • Ability to act as “lead” CLS in daily performance of duties to include QC management, department operations and inventory supply.
  • Extended duty and on-call may be required as needed.
  • Ability to wear lab coats, gloves, and protective devices as required when handling specimens.
  • Ability to use protective barrier equipment as required.
  • Ability to perform phlebotomy (venipunctures, finger sticks, heel sticks) as appropriate for the patient.
  • Ability to perform duties required for relief in higher classification in supervisor’s absence.
  • Ability to provide complete and accurate responses to safety questions.
  • Ability to maintain work area and equipment in the condition required by department standards.
  • Ability to demonstrate proper body mechanics in all functions.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of techniques, procedures, and correct use of protective barrier equipment.
  • Ability to attend annual education programs.
  • Ability to interact with patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees in a considerate, helpful, and courteous manner.
  • Ability to maintain professional composure and confidence during stressful situations.

Responsibilities

  • Performs laboratory test procedures in one or more sections of the Clinical Laboratory, using good judgment and independent actions.
  • Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
  • Evaluates specimens for acceptability for proper testing and investigates and documents problems with unacceptable specimens.
  • Organizes workload for maximum efficiency and accurately performs tests as requested on specimens received.
  • Verifies accuracy of results before reporting and reports test results in a timely manner according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
  • Reports results for stats, abnormal, critical values, and other categories of special requests as defined by laboratory policy.
  • Documents special handling required for test results that meet outlying criteria.
  • Follows established procedures for laboratory quality control and reports discrepancies to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Performs appropriate quality control for the test procedure and records results obtained.
  • Appropriately notifies supervisor of discrepant QC results.
  • Performs daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed, maintenance on instruments and equipment as appropriate.
  • Performs calibration of equipment as required and documents performance of maintenance and calibration procedures.
  • Troubleshoots instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimens when problems occur, notifying the supervisor if unable to solve the problem.
  • Documents steps taken during the troubleshooting process.
  • Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures, including wearing lab coats, gloves, and protective devices.
  • Follows safety policies for dress and reports any safety hazards to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Properly disposes of contaminated and hazardous waste materials.
  • Performs phlebotomy (venipunctures, finger sticks, heel sticks) as appropriate for the patient.
  • Attends all required safety training programs and demonstrates knowledge of responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job-related hazards.
  • Operates assigned equipment and performs all procedures in a safe manner as instructed.
  • Maintains work area and equipment in the condition required by department standards.
  • Demonstrates proper body mechanics in all functions.
  • Follows the hospital exposure control plans/blood borne and airborne pathogens.
  • Ensures a safe environment by complying with established procedures.
  • Attends annual education programs.
