The Clinical Laboratory Scientist I performs waived, moderate, or highly complex tests authorized by CLIA, responsibilities listed under 42 CFR § 493.1425 and § 493.1495. The role requires a degree of skill commensurate with the individual’s education, training, experience, and technical abilities. Responsibilities include adhering to laboratory procedures for test collection, processing, analysis, and reporting, following quality control policies, identifying and correcting or reporting problems with test performance, performing a wide variety of laboratory procedures using manual and automated methods in various disciplines, performing and documenting instrument maintenance, reviewing the accuracy of patient results, recognizing age-specific differences in expected results, ensuring proper handling of proficiency testing samples, and potentially performing venipuncture or capillary puncture. The role may also involve assisting in policy development, adhering to safety and infection control procedures, potentially acting as a Lead Tech in the absence of a supervisor, and performing responsibilities related to POCT. Other tasks may be assigned by management.
