About The Position

The Clinical Laboratory Assistant performs a variety of routine laboratory tests and procedures under minimal supervision. This role involves specimen collection, processing, preparation, and transport, as well as patient registration and phone support. The assistant is responsible for maintaining laboratory equipment, ensuring a clean work area, stocking supplies, and organizing the workspace. They must practice sterile techniques, handle biological specimens, and adhere to safety and infection control policies, including the use of PPE. This position works in a fast-paced clinical environment with exposure to biohazardous materials and other potential hazards.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques to perform minor laboratory tests
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to operate, clean, and sterilize
  • Knowledge of appropriate medical terminology to communicate with staff
  • Knowledge of computer systems and applications
  • Knowledge of organizational policies, procedures and protocols
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and universal precautions to establish a safe work environment
  • Ability to perform phlebotomy through venous and capillary puncture following established procedures in accordance with age specific considerations of patients.
  • Ability to observe strict principles of antisepsis to prevent infection of patient and contamination of specimens.
  • Ability to receive and collect urine specimens to perform all routine tests.
  • Ability to perform specimen preparation for all procedures/tests.
  • Ability to maintain supplies inventory communicating needs to supervisor.
  • Ability to report varying in-house test results in addition to all abnormal findings to clinical staff.
  • Ability to comply with all policies and OSHA regulations related to safety, cleanliness, and infection control.
  • Ability to practice sterile technique and prevent cross contamination.
  • Ability to handle blood and body fluids and deal with infectious patients.
  • Ability to follow general safety procedures and utilize PPE appropriately.
  • Ability to stand, walk, stretch, stoop, bend, and lift light (20 pound) to moderately heavy (50 pound) loads.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification in phlebotomy preferred for facilities where phlebotomy is an assigned duty.

Responsibilities

  • Collects and processes patient blood specimens via venipuncture and capillary puncture accurately and timely.
  • Processes non-blood patient specimens accurately and timely.
  • Assists in specimen preparation, receipt, and transport.
  • Performs patient registration.
  • Provides polite and supportive phone support for patient care areas.
  • Maintains competency with hospital and laboratory information systems.
  • Trains new team members and students on standard work processes.
  • Receives lab orders from providers, prepares documentation, and performs routine laboratory tests.
  • Maintains documentation for all tests and labels specimens according to standards.
  • Maintains knowledge of specimen collection devices and tubes.
  • Maintains equipment, keeps the area clean, stocks supplies, and keeps the workspace organized.
  • Practices sterile technique and prevents cross-contamination.
  • Handles blood and body fluids and deals with infectious patients.
  • Performs minor laboratory procedures accurately, precisely, and efficiently under minimal supervision (chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, immunology).
  • Performs phlebotomy through venous and capillary puncture following established procedures and age-specific considerations.
