About The Position

The UHealth Laboratories Department at the University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Laboratory Assistant. The Clinical Laboratory Assistant 1 performs a variety of routine duties in assisting technical and professional personnel in clinical and research laboratories. An employee in this position provides broad support for the laboratory operations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent/relevant experience, certification or license

Responsibilities

  • Identifies, handles, and accessions patient samples requiring laboratory testing.
  • Transports specimens and communicates test results timely and accurately.
  • Maintains required laboratory files and logs system in a neat and accurate manner.
  • Performs specimen processing, such as centrifugation, aliquoting, and volume measurement.
  • Maintains adequate inventory level as per protocol.
  • Participates in the performance improvement processes for the department.
  • Maintains assigned work area in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all patient information according to federal and state guidelines and regulations.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
  • Uses Epic to accurately review and release orders, send secure communications, and view daily schedules.
  • Identifies and retrieves appropriate pathology requisitions for test processing.
  • Uses the pathology laboratory information system to accurately accession flow cytometry, molecular, cytogenetic, and cytology orders.
  • Uses the blood bank information system to receive orders, ensuring proper specimen labeling (date, time of collection, and collector initials).
  • Uses the blood bank system to receive, transfer, and issue blood products.
  • Performs daily inventory of blood bank products.
  • Communicates with nursing staff regarding specimen issues, including redraws.
  • Reports critical values accurately and within established timeframes.
  • Uses Quest and LabCorp test directories to ensure proper specimen handling, transport, and aliquoting based on ordered tests.
  • Uses external laboratory accessioning systems to process orders from reference labs (e.g., Quest, LabCorp, Viracor).
  • Utilizes laboratory communication platforms for test lookup and order management.
