About The Position

This position performs quantitative and qualitative clinical laboratory determinations as requested by physicians including procurement of specimens, computation of test results, and submitting completed reports. This is a single position class in which the incumbent’s responsibility of functioning must be based on advanced knowledge and skills in providing diagnostic testing to medical staff. Incumbents are assigned to work or float in appropriate areas. Responsibilities are expanded to include participation in activities relating to quality assurance, quality control, proficiency testing, policy and procedure review, in-service training and staff development.

Requirements

  • Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree with successful completion of an accredited Clinical Laboratory training program as evidenced by licensure from the State of California.
  • Minimum one year recent experience in an approved hospital laboratory.
  • Possession of a valid license to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in the State of California is required.
  • Knowledge of hospital established policies and procedures for quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.
  • Knowledge of clinical laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Knowledge of clinical laboratory terminology and laboratory routines.
  • Knowledge of the appropriate uses of procedures and tests.
  • Knowledge of exposure to infections and contagious diseases.
  • Knowledge of exposure to the risk of blood borne diseases.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing clinical laboratory practices.

Nice To Haves

  • American Society of Clinical Pathology certification recommended.

Responsibilities

  • Perform quantitative and qualitative clinical laboratory determinations.
  • Procure specimens.
  • Compute test results.
  • Submit completed reports.
  • Participate in activities relating to quality assurance, quality control, proficiency testing, policy and procedure review, in-service training and staff development.
  • Perform the full range of laboratory duties and responsibilities in an acute care setting.
  • Plan and organize diagnostic testing procedures on patient specimens.
  • Maintain concise and complete records and test reports.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, patients, and fellow employees, and with all internal and external customers.
  • Handle absentee replacement on short notice.
  • Work occasional irregular hours.
  • Manage emergency or crisis situations.
  • Keep abreast of developments in area of laboratory testing.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Maintain, demonstrate and be assessed on the knowledge and skills necessary to provide for physical, psychosocial and cultural needs appropriate to the age of the patients served on his/her assigned unit.
