About The Position

This position is in the HLA Lab within the Department of Pathology at UC Irvine. The role involves performing HLA Typing of patients and potential donors using molecular-based methods, monitoring patients for HLA antibodies, performing flow crossmatches, and conducting quality control and troubleshooting. The scientist will also teach and train students, perform a full range of lab duties from specimen procurement to data analysis and reporting for disease detection, diagnosis, and treatment, and be responsible for accurately reporting test results. Additionally, the role includes providing customer service to clients and providers. This position is for the AM shift, and the candidate will carry a pager and be on-call.

Requirements

  • Must be willing to carry the pager and be on-call.
  • Must be able to work variable shifts and overtime as required.
  • Knowledge of immunology and genetics of HLA system.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the Health System.
  • Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload.
  • Must be flexible with urgent requests.
  • Must be willing to testify in court regarding testing activities if subpoenaed.
  • Must possess the computer skills: word and excel.
  • Must possess the communication and customer service skills, both verbal and written.
  • Bachelor's degree in science.
  • Clinical Laboratory Scientist, current CA CLS License.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience
  • One-year clinical laboratory experience.
  • Must be able to provide proof of work authorization

Nice To Haves

  • Must be willing to take the CHT (Certified Histocompatibility Technologist) test after 1 year of working.

Responsibilities

  • Performs HLA Typing of patients and potential donors by molecular based methods.
  • Monitors patients for the presence of HLA antibodies in their sera and determine their specificities.
  • Performs flow crossmatches.
  • Performs quality control and troubleshooting.
  • Teaches and trains students.
  • Performs the full range of duties from specimen procurement through data analysis and reporting, in order to provide data for use in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of diseases in all areas of the lab.
  • Responsible for reporting out test results accurately.
  • Provide customer service to clients and providers.
