About The Position

This role oversees the workflow of the lab to ensure turn-around times are met, troubleshoots or investigates malfunctioning Chemistry procedures and analyzers, and aids in the development of new procedures or modification of existing ones under the direction of a project leader. The position also performs lab compliance procedures including calibration and calibration verification of assays, establishes and maintains QC materials and data, and assists in training of new CLS’s and CLS trainees. The specialist will also work as a bench CLS as needed.

Requirements

Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
College graduate degree with a BA or BS in a related science.
Two years of recent experience performing clinical lab testing in the Clinical Laboratories.
Demonstrated superior theoretical knowledge, technical judgment and skills and the ability to work with a minimum of supervision.
Assumes responsibilities for keeping abreast of technical developments through current literature review.
As requested by a Chemistry Supervisor, evaluates new procedures, and makes recommendations.
California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license or California Clinical Chemistry Scientist License.

Responsibilities

Oversees the daily technical work, including monitoring maintenance, troubleshooting instrument and procedural problems, minimizing downtime, interacting with service personnel, determining the need for back-up instrumentation/methods, investigating all aspects of problems, determining if incorrect results were reported and correcting them, ensuring stated turnaround times are met, establishing and maintaining quality control, submitting data for control ranges, resolving out-of-control problems, monitoring and performing instrument calibration, acting as an intermediary consultant to physicians, documenting communication from ordering doctors, documenting patient's clinical laboratory data, reporting problems to supervisors, following through to ensure problems are handled, reviewing work of CLS/HLT, handling mislabeled specimen problems, and initiating Laboratory Problem Reports.
Teaches or reviews with Clinical Laboratory Scientists, CLS trainees, and HLTs the procedures, operations, and related theory of tests and instruments, including training following current protocols, establishing training schedules, accumulating and using teaching materials, and maintaining training records.
Updates existing test procedures and develops new ones, including assisting in reviewing and updating existing procedures annually, learning and using computer software for procedure formats, scientifically challenging suggested changes, reviewing changes with supervisors and CLS/HLT, and developing new test procedures by reviewing literature, collecting and organizing data, writing procedures, performing quality control (linearity, precision, comparing results, developing normal and control ranges), interacting with computer specialists, and training CLS/HLT.
Performs compliance related duties, including calibration verification of assays, coordinating inter-equipment comparisons, and ensuring proficiency test samples are completed and submitted by the deadline.
Performs additional duties, projects, and/or special assignments when requested by the supervisor, contributes to employees' annual evaluations, maintains adequate supply inventory and orders supplies, and assists crash captain during LIS/HIS downtimes.
Assists in and ensures continued smooth operation of the Chemistry section and adequate response to patient needs, including working as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in the Chemistry section as assigned, temporarily assuming supervisory responsibilities in the absence of supervisors, and adhering to infection control and personal protection guidelines while maintaining a clean and safe work area.
