This position is accountable for performing clinical laboratory testing, following all applicable policies and procedures. The Clinical Lab Scientist I independently performs moderate to highly complex clinical tests, prepares and oversees the preparation of reagents or media, tests new reagents or controls, and evaluates their usefulness. They determine the acceptability of specimens for testing, calculate results, and accurately enter them into the system. The role involves checking computer review reports, adhering to analytical schedules, and evaluating the acceptability of analyses before releasing patient reports. Recognizing and responding to critical values or unusual results, performing preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibrating laboratory equipment are key responsibilities. The position also includes performing Quality Control, calibrations, and proficiency testing, as well as ensuring accurate tracking and labeling of reagents and supplies. Maintaining a safe and neat work area, demonstrating effective communication, and participating in staff and Quality Improvement meetings are also expected. Additional responsibilities may include evaluating new techniques and procedures, method comparison, cost analysis, establishing reference ranges, writing/revising technical procedures, and evaluating productivity. The role requires adherence to all safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines, proper waste disposal, and maintaining confidentiality. The Clinical Lab Scientist I may provide direct supervision to unlicensed staff, train staff in procedures, support training programs, and maintain professional growth through continuing education to meet California state licensure requirements. Answering phones, transferring calls, and taking messages are also part of the duties. Compliance with all health and safety policies and the use of personal protective equipment are mandatory.
