This position is accountable for performing clinical laboratory testing, following all applicable policies and procedures. The Clinical Lab Scientist I role involves independently performing moderate to highly complex clinical tests, preparing reagents, overseeing reagent preparation, testing new reagents, and evaluating their usefulness. The role also includes determining specimen acceptability, calculating results, accurately entering results, and monitoring computer review reports for accuracy. Adherence to analytical schedules to maintain turnaround times, evaluation of routine and complex analyses, and recognition of critical values are key aspects. The position is also responsible for equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration, and evaluating instrument performance. Quality Control and calibration are performed with appropriate frequency, and control materials are selected and evaluated. A corrective action process is initiated when test systems do not perform as expected. Proficiency testing is performed and recorded accurately, with the ability to detect and correct technical and operational problems. The role requires notifying supervisors and contacting manufacturers or field service support when necessary. Ensuring accurate tracking and labeling of reagents and supplies, maintaining a safe and neat work area, and demonstrating effective communication are essential. Active participation in staff and Quality Improvement meetings, taking on additional business-related responsibilities or projects, and adhering to safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines are also part of the role. This includes collecting and disposing of waste properly, maintaining confidentiality, and providing direct supervision and training to unlicensed staff. Professional growth and development through continuing education, answering phones, and complying with health and safety policies are also expected.
