About The Position

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, Ingalls Memorial Hospital, as a Clinical Lab Associate 4 in the Laboratory Service Center department. In this role, you will work in partnership with other laboratory team members and departments, patient care services, and other hospital departments. The Laboratory Service Center is available for urgent or standard result times, analyzing specimens at cellular, chemical, endocrinological, or immunologic levels. Through numerous lab specialties and processes, an expansive array of tests are performed by experienced laboratory professionals to provide insights on health. This position is 100% onsite and requires being based in the greater Chicagoland area. Under the leadership of the Director of Laboratory Services and Laboratory Supervisors, the Clinical Lab Associate 4 performs supportive work in patient care delivery, involving multiple office, clerical, and technical duties. This includes interacting, intervening, and problem-solving to ensure exceptional customer service by greeting patients, responding to telephone inquiries, handling phones/faxes, and distributing test results. The role also involves processing human specimens for delivery to laboratory departments for testing, performing a limited number of technical procedures after demonstrating competency, and collecting blood specimens in compliance with Federal Regulatory Guidelines. The associate must demonstrate necessary skills and knowledge through competencies appropriate to the age of patients served.

Requirements

  • Must have completed high school or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of accredited phlebotomy course or program.
  • Must have the equivalent of 6-months full-time employment involving phlebotomy, and/or laboratory, medical or clerical experience, with emphasis on customer service.
  • Performance of phlebotomy and/or cardiology skills valid as assessed by competency tools with a minimum pass rate of 80 percent is mandatory.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and basic computer skills are essential.
  • Effective interpersonal skills in dealing with patients, families, and co-workers.
  • Ability to function effectively in an extended team environment.
  • Ability to resolve conflict effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Performs assigned supportive work in the delivery of patient care, involving multiple office, clerical and technical duties.
  • Interacts, intervenes, and problem solves to ensure exceptional customer service by greeting patients, responding to telephone inquiries, phones/faxes and distributes test results.
  • Processes human specimens for delivery to laboratory departments for testing.
  • Performs limited number of technical procedures, for which training has been given and competency demonstrated.
  • Performs blood specimen collection within compliance of Federal Regulatory Guidelines.
  • Demonstrates necessary skills and knowledge through competencies for specific skills; all appropriate to the age of patients served as delineated by competency tools.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Delivers samples to appropriate departments within acceptable time limits.
  • Monitors for completion of STAT out-patient tests and promptly notifies referring physician/agency.
  • Ensures timely registration of specimens, and handling of special accounts.
  • Ensures timeliness in relay of patient results by investigating delays and monitoring for completion of specimen collection and resulting.
  • Performs all venipunctures and specimen collections following policies and procedures of the Department of Laboratory Services at satellites of the laboratory, and/or at client offices while providing excellent customer service.
  • Handles specimens upon receipt in lab following the policies and procedures of the Department of Laboratory Services.
  • Prepares specimens to be sent to outside reference laboratories in accordance with requirements specified for each referral laboratory.
  • Ensures outpatients receive excellent customer service when presenting at the laboratory for specimen collection.
  • Ensures proper registration and ordering of tests.
  • Performs registration of patient into patient financial system or LIS system according to procedure to ensure correct billing.
  • Enters physician ordered tests into LIS.
