About The Position

Performs venipuncture and capillary specimen collection on patients demonstrating age-specific competencies. Depending on work location, performs in-house phlebotomy, in house processing, phlebotomy in a physician office setting, or resignation and phlebotomy in a patient service center. Demonstrates effective communication among laboratory colleagues, clients, physicians, medical office staff and patients. Provides timely and accurate information upon request. Acts as an ambassador of the laboratory; demonstrates excellent customer service and uses AIDET to alleviate patient anxiety. This position will travel to multiple draw sites during the work week.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent or applicable course work to be applied to obtain required WA State Medical Assistant-Phlebotomy (MA-P)- Certification.
  • 3 years of experience working in a clinical laboratory role
  • Washington Medical Assistant-Phlebotomy (MA-P) upon hire
  • Current Healthcare Provider BLS-American Heart Association by start date
  • Medical terminology

Nice To Haves

  • Certification from an approved laboratory-training program with successful completion of a required internship preferred, or relevant work experience
  • Previous training and competence in dealing with unique needs in the range of customer service situations with clinicians and their office staff.
  • Working knowledge of the various government regulations specifically Medicare and the Washington state medical Test Site regulations.
  • Working knowledge of the College of American Pathologists (ASCP) and the Joint Commission (TJC) inspection criteria

Responsibilities

  • Performs venipuncture and capillary puncture blood sample collections on patients of all age groups.
  • Accurately identifies and labels all specimens following established laboratory protocol.
  • Uses the laboratory information system and other reference laboratory’s web-based applications to independently solve complex issues in a sensitive, caring, and timely manner.
  • Process all specimens in accordance with laboratory protocol including the proper handling, centrifugation, storage, packaging, and transport.
  • Responsible for collecting all insurance/financial information necessary for proper billing.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of requirements for collecting ABN’s and filling out MSPQ information.
  • Accurately enters orders and patient demographic information in the laboratory information system.
  • Works as a resource for training new phlebotomists at multiple locations.
  • Adheres to department policies and procedures related to safety, food and beverages, infection control and the use of personal protective equipment.
  • Keeps colleagues informed and communicates any unfinished tasks to the next shift appropriate personnel.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
