About The Position

Performs venipuncture and capillary specimen collection on patients demonstrating age-specific competencies. Depending on work location, performs in-house phlebotomy, in house processing, phlebotomy in a physician office setting, or resignation and phlebotomy in a patient service center. Demonstrates effective communication among laboratory colleagues, clients, physicians, medical office staff and patients. Provides timely and accurate information upon request. Acts as an ambassador of the laboratory; demonstrates excellent customer service and uses AIDET to alleviate patient anxiety. This position will travel to multiple draw sites during the work week.

Requirements

High School graduate or equivalent or applicable course work to be applied to obtain required WA State Medical Assistant-Phlebotomy (MA-P)- Certification.
3 years of experience working in a clinical laboratory role
Washington Medical Assistant-Phlebotomy (MA-P) upon hire
Current Healthcare Provider BLS-American Heart Association by start date

Nice To Haves

Certification from an approved laboratory-training program with successful completion of a required internship preferred, or relevant work experience
Previous training and competence in dealing with unique needs in the range of customer service situations with clinicians and their office staff.
Working knowledge of the various government regulations specifically Medicare and the Washington state medical Test Site regulations.
Working knowledge of the College of American Pathologists (ASCP) and the Joint Commission (TJC) inspection criteria

Responsibilities

Performs venipuncture and capillary puncture blood sample collections on patients of all age groups.
Accurately identifies and labels all specimens following established laboratory protocol.
Uses the laboratory information system and other reference laboratory’s web-based applications to independently solve complex issues in a sensitive, caring, and timely manner.
Process all specimens in accordance with laboratory protocol including the proper handling, centrifugation, storage, packaging, and transport.
Responsible for collecting all insurance/financial information necessary for proper billing.
Demonstrates knowledge of requirements for collecting ABN’s and filling out MSPQ information.
Accurately enters orders and patient demographic information in the laboratory information system.
Works as a resource for training new phlebotomists at multiple locations.
Adheres to department policies and procedures related to safety, food and beverages, infection control and the use of personal protective equipment.
Keeps colleagues informed and communicates any unfinished tasks to the next shift appropriate personnel.
Performs other duties as assigned.
