About The Position

The Clinical Lab Assistant (CLA) will work closely with the CLA Manager, Laboratory Supervisor, and Lab Director to maintain a high level of accuracy, efficiency, and proficiency in specimen collection and processing. This role involves phlebotomy and point-of-care testing at various locations, ensuring all lab requests are promptly stored, specimens are correctly labeled, and department procedures are followed. The CLA will double-check and verify all information and patient identifiers before accessioning specimens into the Meditech LIS/HIS system. They will also ensure communication and coordination with staff for STAT, Urgent, and Routine requests, ensuring they are correctly logged, promptly sorted, and safely transported. The CLA must accurately and efficiently perform proper specimen handling, processing, micro-culture set-up & gram stain, including technical and documentation tasks such as drawing blood, bar code labeling, and specimen handling. Maintaining cleanliness and orderliness in laboratory and patient drawing areas is also a key responsibility.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (required)
  • PBT ASCP certified or equivalent (required)

Nice To Haves

  • One year of phlebotomy experience (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the CLA Manager, Laboratory Supervisor, and Lab Director to maintain a high level of accuracy, efficiency, and proficiency in specimen collection and processing.
  • Ensure all lab requests are promptly stored in their specified locations.
  • Perform phlebotomy and point-of-care testing at various locations.
  • Receive and collect patient and lab specimens, following proper collection procedures.
  • Ensure specimens are correctly labeled and department procedures are followed.
  • Double check and verify all information and patient identifiers before accessioning specimens into the Meditech LIS/HIS system.
  • Ensure communication and coordination with staff for STAT, Urgent (3 hour TAT), and Routine requests.
  • Ensure requests are correctly logged, promptly sorted, and safely transported to the appropriate sections of the laboratory and/or for send-outs.
  • Accurately and efficiently perform proper specimen handling, processing, micro-culture set-up & gram stain.
  • Perform technical and documentation tasks such as drawing blood, bar code labeling, and specimen handling.
  • Keep laboratory and patient drawing areas, trays, and materials clean and orderly.
