About The Position

This full-time (36 hours/week) Clinical Lab Assistant position at Banner Fort Collins Medical Center in Fort Collins, CO, assists technical lab staff. Responsibilities include the collection, receipt, and processing of biological specimens, preparation of samples for analytical testing, and potentially performing waived and/or limited moderate complexity testing if CLIA minimum requirements are met or as approved by the CLIA Medical Director. The position reports to department leadership and takes direction from higher-level technical personnel, performing all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, and professional standards.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must be 18 years or older if performing phlebotomy
  • Phlebotomy/CLA certification as defined by state regulations
  • Progression through career ladder II-IV is subject to completion of career ladder requirements
  • Position may require DHS Fingerprinting Certification or the ability to obtain fingerprint certification
  • Dependent on department/location, candidate must possess a valid state driver's license in the state of employment and be eligible for coverage under the company auto insurance policy

Responsibilities

  • Process and prepare patient samples, including specimen collection, ensuring correct patient and specimen identification and integrity.
  • Perform general laboratory specimen processing and referral laboratory processing.
  • Perform waived and moderate complexity testing under direct supervision while meeting performance standards and knowledge level for approved testing.
  • Demonstrate understanding of computer systems used in the department.
  • Track and locate missing specimens and monitor pending lists.
  • Perform maintenance activities on laboratory equipment as directed.
  • Demonstrate awareness and conform with accrediting agency and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure all work performed is accurate, complete, and within defined time frames.
  • Meet department standards for productivity and quality.
  • Perform quality control for testing, basic troubleshooting, and communicate technical concerns to technical staff.
  • Participate in detecting and documenting deviations from defined procedures.
  • Demonstrate basic problem-solving skills with QC, testing, and computer issues.
  • Maintain acceptable specimen rejection rates, if applicable.
  • Participate in departmental financial responsibilities through appropriate use of supplies and materials.
  • Assist with inventory management.
  • Participate in department initiatives to reduce costs and improve service.
  • Perform miscellaneous support duties, which may include phlebotomy and training.
  • Contribute to the updates of training documents and procedures.
  • Communicate courteously, professionally, effectively, and accurately with internal and external customers.
  • Demonstrate skills for basic computer inquiry and problem solving, and use of communication equipment.
  • Demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Promote positive communications that enhance teamwork.
  • Attend and participate at staff meetings.
