About The Position

Under the general supervision of the lab leadership, this role involves processing laboratory specimens, data entry, and specimen transport as ordered by clinicians. The ideal candidate will exhibit the ability to work independently and provide excellent customer service, adhering to CHOP ICARE values and Service Standards.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma / GED
  • Knowledge of basic biology, basic chemistry, English language, customer service, public safety and security.
  • Proficiency in electronic mail, Microsoft Office applications, typing, internet software, Microsoft Windows.
  • Skills in active listening, reading comprehension, critical thinking, speaking, complex problem solving, monitoring, time management, writing, active learning, coordination, judgment and decision making, service orientation, social perceptiveness.
  • Abilities in oral expression, near vision, manual dexterity, perceptual speed, information ordering, problem sensitivity, oral comprehension, finger dexterity, written comprehension, arm-hand steadiness, deductive reasoning, selective attention, speech clarity, speech recognition, visual color discrimination, writing expression, number facility.

Responsibilities

  • Assess specimen requirements and specimen integrity.
  • Triage, accession, process, and deliver specimens following established procedures.
  • Perform waived testing.
  • Prepare and distribute specialized collection containers.
  • Problem-solve to avoid re-collection when possible.
  • Store specimens according to laboratory-specific storage directives.
  • Provide face-to-face customer service guided by CHOP ICARE Values and Service Standards.
  • Interface with patients, laboratory staff, medical staff, medical courier, and vendors.
  • Provide a patient-centric collaborative experience.
  • Diffuse anger or frustration, aim to provide solutions.
  • Answer questions and provide support.
  • Ensure proper phone etiquette and a warm tone of voice.
  • Call critical lab values to clinicians.
  • Maintain and clean medical laboratory equipment (e.g., centrifuges, vortex, refrigerator, freezers, glassware).
  • Manage blood product inventory ordering.
  • Restock supplies.
  • Assist in monitoring inventory control.
  • Provide limited messenger service as required, promptly delivering specimens or paperwork throughout the healthcare campus.
  • Promptly activate and execute pneumatic tube downtime procedures.
  • Ensure knowledge of transport temperatures for all specimens to maintain stability.
  • Be flexible in scheduling and cooperative in performing all assigned tasks.
  • Work rotating on-call, weekends, and holidays when required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Lab leadership team.
