UNC-Chapel Hill•Chapel Hill, NC

About The Position

The Department of Neurological Surgery is seeking a full-time physician for appointment as a Clinical Instructor. The role is designed for a neurosurgeon who can function independently in the operating room, participate in the general neurosurgery call schedule, and contribute to resident education, advanced surgical training, and laboratory-based research. The physician is expected to demonstrate independent clinical judgment and operative competence in general neurosurgery. The Clinical Instructor will manage neurosurgical emergencies and trauma cases, perform cerebrospinal fluid diversion procedures such as ventricular shunt placement and revision, and treat neurosurgical infections and other commonly encountered general neurosurgical conditions. The physician will independently perform these procedures while supervising and teaching residents in patient evaluation, surgical planning, operative management, and postoperative care. For complex skull base, neuro-oncology, cerebrovascular, and advanced cranial procedures, the Clinical Instructor will serve as a primary operative assistant. This work offers focused training in complex skull base surgery, endoscopic endonasal and other endoscope-assisted approaches, endoscopic aneurysm surgery, cerebrovascular procedures, and open cranial approaches. The position provides progressive exposure to advanced techniques alongside contributions to patient care and resident education. A central component of the position is leadership within the surgical anatomy and neuroanatomy laboratory. The Clinical Instructor will help supervise the laboratory and serve as the primary point of reference for international research fellows and visiting scholars conducting studies in microsurgical and endoscopic anatomy, comparative operative approaches, cadaveric dissections, and innovative surgical techniques. Responsibilities include supporting laboratory project organization and execution, guiding fellows in anatomical dissections and research methodology, ensuring appropriate laboratory practices, facilitating collaboration among faculty, residents, fellows, and visiting investigators, and contributing to scientific presentations, manuscripts, educational materials, and other scholarly work.
