About The Position

Mayo Clinic is seeking a Clinical Hemodialysis Technician to provide specialized care for patients undergoing dialysis. This role involves working with a Registered Nurse to perform basic dialysis care, including starting and stopping treatments, monitoring patients during treatment, and maintaining dialysis equipment. The technician will also assist with patient care tasks and supply inventory management, requiring attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions. As an integral member of the healthcare team, the Clinical Hemodialysis Technician functions within the Mayo Clinic Dialysis Services (MCDS) system, assisting the RN in various aspects of dialysis services. This includes direct patient care and observation, performing basic hemodialysis techniques, equipment maintenance, water treatment monitoring, vascular access monitoring, cleaning and disinfection of hemodialysis machines, drawing and preparing blood samples for transport, and conducting simple and complex laboratory tests with required quality controls. Participation in quality improvement activities is also expected. The technician will carry out designated skills within the scope of unlicensed nursing personnel as defined by law, the Core Curriculum for the Dialysis Technician, and Mayo Clinic policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Certified nursing assistant training course required OR one year of direct patient care experience in a hospital setting or other health care setting OR RN student with one semester of clinical coursework completed OR completion of a Dialysis Technician training program.
  • Successful completion of the Ishihara's color blindness test before employment.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Computer skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which may include days, evenings, nights, holidays and weekends.
  • Ability to effectively work with multiple team members including working at/floating to other dialysis units.
  • Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting.
  • Maintains current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers from one of the following programs: American Heart Association (BLS for Healthcare Providers), Red Cross (CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers), or Military Training Network.
  • Successful completion of Clinical Hemodialysis Technician national certification exam, within 18 months of hire when hired after October 14, 2008. Exam offered by the State, BONENT, or NNCC.

Responsibilities

  • Provide basic dialysis care, including starting and stopping treatment.

  • Function as an interdisciplinary team member to meet patient and family care needs within the Mayo Clinic Dialysis Services (MCDS) system.
  • Provide assistance in the provision of dialysis services through multiple roles under the supervision of the RN.
  • Perform direct patient care and observations.
  • Perform basic hemodialysis techniques and procedures.
  • Perform equipment maintenance.
  • Monitor water treatment.
  • Monitor vascular access.
  • Clean and disinfect the hemodialysis machine.
  • Draw blood samples and prepare them for transport.
  • Perform both simple and complex laboratory tests and the required quality controls.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities to maintain patient care standards.
  • Carry out designated skills that are within the functions limited by law to unlicensed nursing personnel.
