About The Position

This position is open to current Salinas Valley Dental Care employees only. The Clinical Shift Charge is the floor coordinator for the day, serving as the clinical equivalent of a hospital charge nurse. Assigned on a rotating basis from the master schedule, this role directs the clinical team to ensure the day runs smoothly, safely, and productively. This is a decision-making role, not a coverage role.

Requirements

  • Ability to make decisions regarding clinical operations and patient flow
  • Understanding of infection control and clinical safety standards
  • Ability to coordinate with doctors and clinical leads
  • Skills in managing emergencies and directing team response

  • Ability to document shift activities and open items

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a charge nurse or similar floor coordination role

Responsibilities

  • Open the floor — review the clinical schedule, confirm room readiness, and brief the team on the day's priorities
  • Direct clinical team members on assignment and patient flow throughout the shift
  • Monitor clinical efficiency — identify bottlenecks, chair turnover issues, or scheduling gaps in real time
  • Ensure infection control and clinical safety standards are maintained throughout the shift
  • Coordinate with the Managing Doctor and clinical leads on cases that need attention
  • Manage emergencies — direct the team response when a clinical emergency or unexpected situation arises
  • Monitor team breaks and lunches — ensure the floor remains covered and compliant
  • Close the shift — confirm all clinical closing duties are complete and document any open items
  • When a team member calls out, the Shift Charge does NOT absorb that role. Their job is to make the right call: DECISION-MAKING STEPS: Identify which chairs, providers, or roles are impacted by the absence, Assess whether existing clinical team members can absorb specific tasks (not the full role), Contact qualified team members to determine if an additional shift can be added, Escalate to the Clinical Supervisor if the gap cannot be safely covered, Document the call-out, coverage plan, and any clinical impact in the shift log
  • THIS ROLE DOES NOT: Step in and perform the absent team member's full clinical role while managing Shift Charge duties, Make staffing or clinical decisions that exceed their scope — those escalate to the Clinical Supervisor, Skip shift documentation or closing duties regardless of how demanding the day was
  • Any decision beyond the scope of this role escalates to: Clinical Supervisor
