About The Position

The Department of Biomedical & Nutritional Sciences (BNS) at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML) invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track Clinical Faculty (open rank) to also serve as the Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) Program Director. The successful candidate will teach and mentor students, provide strategic, academic, and operational leadership for the NAACLS-accredited MLS program, work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, clinical affiliates, alumni, and external partners to advance program quality, student success, and workforce relevance, and provide other service to the department and university. We seek an innovative and student-centered educator and director who will oversee program organization, curriculum quality, accreditation, assessment, continuous review, and overall program effectiveness while contributing to teaching, mentoring, recruitment, and service in support of the department, college, and university mission.

Requirements

  • Earned doctoral degree (PhD, ScD, EdD, or equivalent) in a science field closely related and relevant to Medical Laboratory Science.
  • Current MLS(ASCP)CM certification.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current educational methods, curriculum design, student assessment, accreditation, and certification procedures relevant to MLS education.
  • Minimum of 3 years of teaching experience with evidence of effective teaching, including classroom, student laboratory and/or bench teaching at professional sites.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and contribute effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Progressive leadership and teaching experience in a NAACLS-accredited MLS or closely related clinical/medical laboratory science program.
  • Experience with management of accreditation processes, including NAACLS, annual documentation and reporting, outcomes assessment, continuous quality improvement, and compliance.
  • Experience building and maintaining partnerships with clinical education affiliates and external advisory groups.
  • Experience mentoring students with varied academic and personal backgrounds.
  • Active engagement in national professional organizations relevant to Medical Laboratory Science.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the coordination and oversight of MLS clinical education and student placements.
  • Experience designing and implementing laboratory curricula and instructional materials.
  • Appointment at the Clinical Associate or Full Professor rank will require a strong record of increasingly responsible academic leadership and professional service.

Responsibilities

  • Overseeing all administrative and instructional aspects of the program, including maintenance of NAACLS accreditation.
  • Engaging in a minimum of 36 hours of documented continuing professional development every three years.
  • Having regular and consistent contact with students, faculty, administration, and program personnel.
  • Teaching in the MLS Program and in the broader Applied Biomedical Sciences curricula, where appropriate.
  • Engaging in experiential learning activities, including laboratory instruction, simulation, and clinical preparation, as necessary and appropriate.
  • Advising and mentoring undergraduate students on academic progression and professional development, including clinical placement preparation and career readiness for MLS students entering the profession.
  • Fostering student success through evidence-based teaching and mentoring practices that support learners from varied academic, professional, and personal backgrounds.
  • Providing additional support as needed for MLS students entering into the profession.
  • Participating in student recruitment, admissions-related activities, orientation, retention initiatives, and career advising as part of the department’s efforts.
  • Participating in department, college, and university service.
  • Representing the MLS Program in university, community, and professional settings.
  • Actively engaging with the profession through continuing professional development/education, keeping up to date with current clinical practices, and/or participation in relevant professional organizations and entities.
  • Building and sustaining relationships that enhance clinical education, student opportunities, workforce development, and engagement with relevant community organizations and entities, in alignment with the department’s mission and strategic plan.
