Clinical Extern (Nursing) - Toronto General Hospital / Toronto Western Hospital
About The Position
The Clinical Extern will be working as part of a team in the capacity of an unregulated health care provider. Clinical externs work in collaboration with a unit under direct and/or indirect supervision of a Registered Health Professional in the care environment. UHN is currently accepting applications from Nursing Students for the Extern program. Externs will be hired on contract, during which the Extern will work part time hours to a maximum of full-time hours (37.5 hours per week). The scheduling of these hours will be determined based on unit needs and may include day/evening/night and weekend shifts.
Requirements
- Must be a Nursing Student between 2nd and 4th year of a College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) approved Baccalaureate Nursing (BScN or BN) program, or in final year of a Practical Nursing (PN) program
- Must be available a minimum of 18.75 hours per week, and have a flexible availability
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification required
Responsibilities
- Liaising with point of care nurses to identify patient care needs
- Acting as a resource to the interprofessional team where needed for patient care tasks, supplies, equipment, transportation
- Assisting with personal hygiene care, patient positioning and transfers
- Assisting with patient ambulation, toileting and with meals including feeding
- Assisting with patient and family communication
- Other duties as assigned to support the care team
