About The Position

The Clinical Ethicist works with the Regional Director and Senior Ethicist to promote the field of health care ethics through clinical ethics consultation, education, scholarship, and innovative research and scholarship. The Clinical Ethicist promotes excellence in the professional practice of clinical ethics consultation by engaging in continuous quality improvement, peer to peer feedback, and research and professional development. The Clinical Ethicist works toward the development of exemplary learning practices, particularly in the area of clinical and organizational ethics education. This position is actively engaged in bringing ethics to bear on larger health care issues that face society and the ministry. In addition, the Clinical Ethicist will serve as a resource across the Oregon Region on matters related to health care ethics; diversity, equity, and inclusion; and mission integration. This position may also provide information and support across the Providence system. In addition, in collaboration with the Regional Director and Senior Ethicist of the Center, the Clinical Ethicist advances the theological and ethical dimensions of the PSJH health care ministry consistent with the PSJH Mission and Values and the Theology and Ethics statement of Vision: "We animate and energize the moral identity of PSJH as a ministry of the Catholic Church at the service of all, empowering caregivers and leaders in developing personal and professional capacities for ethical decision making in alignment with the Mission and Values of PSJH. We nurture conditions where individuals and the organization can act with integrity and justice in identifying and responding to emerging ethical and social issues." The Clinical Ethicist engages in the ethics participation structure of the Theology and Ethics Department by supporting ethics committees and participating in the activities of various councils; the Clinical Ethicist may also contribute to system-wide projects and initiatives of the Department and other goals. Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Health care ethics, bioethics, moral theology or related discipline with expertise in health care ethics Or equivalent education/experience
  • 3 years Clinical experience as an ethicist in a health care or related organization

Nice To Haves

  • Completed fellowship: two years of fellowship training in clinical ethics by an established, well-organized program
  • Two years of supervised clinical ethics experience in a Catholic health care setting or other faith-based health care setting.
  • Candidates who hold the Healthcare Ethics Consultant – Certified (HEC-C) designation from the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH); or who demonstrate the professional competencies to perform the professional duties in a portfolio of professional work upon hire
  • Possesses a record as a teaching scholar with an expertise in ethics, as a mentor and colleague with a clear commitment to enhancing the distinctive mission and quality of ethics in health care upon hire
  • 3 years Clinical experience as an ethicist in a Catholic health care ministry
