About The Position

NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn is seeking a Clinical Equipment Specialist to provide clinical support and perform monitoring and evaluation of electronic surgical systems and associated equipment during surgical procedures. The specialist will work collaboratively with the healthcare team, adhere to hospital standards and values, and participate in leadership meetings to discuss equipment needs and potential issues. This role is crucial for ensuring the smooth operation of the operating room by checking the availability and functionality of electronic devices, instrumentation, and patient-related information, and correcting any deficiencies to prevent delays.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent combination of education and experience related to computer technology.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience in handling clinical equipment within PeriOperative service.
  • Strong verbal communication skills and reasoning ability.
  • Strong leadership qualities and ability to network within a complex environment.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Products and Microsoft Windows Operating Systems.
  • One year of experience in equipment testing, repair, and/or manufacturing.
  • Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in a customer service related role is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Assists OR staff with the setup and clinical operation of various electronic surgical devices including surgical navigation systems, intraoperative imaging devices, surgical lasers, robotics, video systems, microscopes, electrosurgical devices, suction devices, and other systems.
  • Identifies common themes in issues related to rooms and/or equipment and provides recommendations for improvement, new equipment orders, and equipment rearrangement to maximize utilization and efficiency.
  • Anticipates the downstream effect of malfunctioning equipment on OR rooms and procedures, and makes recommendations to leadership for OR closures or procedure delays.
  • Anticipates customer needs and takes responsibility for solving customer problems.
  • Works effectively as a team member, maintaining positive relationships and open communication with other team members.
  • Demonstrates compassion and sensitivity to patients, families, visitors, and other staff, promoting mutual respect.
  • Demonstrates cost-effective use of supplies and time.
  • Maintains patient privacy, dignity, and confidentiality.
  • Assists surgeons with bedside fiducial placement prior to scheduled cases for use with on-site surgical navigation systems.
  • Ensures equipment is clean and ready for use daily, cleaned after each case, and returned to appropriate storage areas.
  • Assists with the timely movement of equipment to the appropriate OR.
  • Orders, maintains, and inventories adequate levels of supplies for surgical lasers, navigation, and robotics.
  • Maintains communication with the IT team and coordinates with Biomed for necessary repairs.
  • Monitors the broken equipment cart for repair issues.
  • Sets up and operates electronic surgical equipment according to manufacturer guidelines and hospital procedures.
  • Serves as a resource for OR staff and monitors compliance with safety practices associated with electronic surgical equipment.
  • Monitors system performance of surgical devices in use, identifying and troubleshooting issues quickly and efficiently.
  • Troubleshoots directly with vendors, describing issues and identifying probable causes for correct part ordering.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Works across a variety of surgical specialties and peri-operative care areas, including the ambulatory surgery center and main operating rooms.
