About The Position

The Clinical Education Specialist performs as an expert clinical practitioner for enhancing the care of patients admitted to MHMC, with primary responsibility over assigned specialty unit(s). The position is responsible for a broad range of activities that include on-unit consultation for nursing staff, development of educational programming and online course content, and auditing of staff competencies with a focus on providing safe patient care, evidenced-based practices, quality improvement, and excellent patient experience. Maintains collaborative relationships with all MHMC Directors, Managers, staff, physicians, and appropriate community organizations and committees. Enhance quality and patient safety.

Requirements

  • Bachelors of Science in Nursing required.
  • Five or more years experience in an acute care setting.
  • Experience in healthcare education required.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) required at hire.
  • Integrative Agitation Management (IAMTAC) required within 30 days of hire.
  • Current clinical specialty certification
  • Must have a good working knowledge, ability to communicate and educate: The California Nurse Practice Act, The Joint Commission rules and regulations (TJC), Nursing Quality Indicators, Evidence Based Best Practices and Nursing Documentation.
  • Ability to positively engage and educate in a one-on-one and group presentation setting, and create effective educational materials and competencies using various resources and computer applications.
  • Demonstrated experience exercising initiative, creativity, resourcefulness, and flexibility in the education of hospital staff related to the objectives and strategic plans for the hospital.
  • Ability to research, interpret, and analyze data from hospital specific applications, and produce solutions to improve processes.
  • Advanced skills required for data reporting and data modeling utilizing Microsoft Office Suite applications and other data management software.
  • Ability to carry out and present research projects as needed.
  • Ability to handle stress, and effectively work with physicians, management, and patient care staff in support of special projects and auditing.
  • Must have strong leadership skills, be compassionate, and have excellent bedside skills.
  • A working knowledge, and able to educate on, electronic medical record nursing documentation.
  • Employees in this position must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care and/or service based on the physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned service area.
  • Employees in this position have access to protected health information. The protected health information a person in this position can access includes demographics, date of service, insurance/billing, medical record summary information, and all other information that may be contained in patient records. This position requires patient health information to perform the functions outlined as part of this position description.

Responsibilities

  • Initiates, develops, implements, reviews nursing policy and procedures and competencies as related to clinical practice.
  • Works primarily within assigned specialty unit but collaborates with other Clinical Education Specialists to provide hospital-wide education as needed.
  • Participates in the establishment of Standards of Practice for a given group of patients.
  • Teaches staff, patients and families how to care for conditions and illness.
  • Identifies and assesses need for changes in services provided in order to improve quality and/or improve efficiencies, based on patient satisfaction core measures and results.
  • Encourages effective cost-containment practices through pathway monitoring and staff development.
  • Acts as a professional role model and expert practitioner in safe patient care planning and delivery.
  • Functions as a clinical resource to nursing staff, physicians, and other ancillary staff as appropriate.
  • Audits and evaluates staff performance of patient care using one-on-one observation, HealthStream and PRC data.
  • Provides results to appropriate leadership.
  • Works with nursing leadership to plan, coordinate and provide education and training to nursing staff in person and through the creation of HealthStream modules.
  • Utilizes results of current research to support or change current practice.
  • Maintains clinical competency and knowledge of current trends in area of specialty.
  • Evaluates and disseminates current literature to nursing staff, physicians, etc.
  • Organizes work schedule in order to provide the necessary education for all staff on all shifts, including weekends.
