About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care department of Food & Nutrition is seeking a Clinical Dietitian to use the Nutrition Care Process to assess, evaluate, and provide medical nutrition therapy and nutrition counseling for adult and geriatric inpatients and outpatients. This role involves teaching dietetic students, participating in multidisciplinary teams, and developing nutritional components of care. The dietitian will demonstrate knowledge of growth and development principles appropriate to patient age, provide quality patient care including nutrition screening, evaluation, assessment, treatment, and documentation, and educate students through on-the-job training. They will also assess nutrition status and counsel patients on appropriate diets, participate in medical team discussions regarding patient food habits and needs, and assist in implementing studies and short-term projects. The position requires active participation in departmental/hospital committees, reviewing production and cost records, and maintaining effective working relationships. The University of Iowa Health Care is recognized as one of the best hospitals in the United States and is Iowa's only comprehensive academic medical center. The department intends to hire candidates at either the Clinical Dietitian I or Clinical Dietitian II classification based on qualifications. The position is 100% time, scheduled from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm.

Requirements

  • Licensure by the State of Iowa is required.
  • Registration by the Commission of Dietetic Registration is required.
  • Excellent written and communication skills are required.
  • A masters degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Candidates registered prior to January 1, 2024, a bachelor's degree in Foods and Nutrition or Dietetics is required.
  • Reasonable (3-5 years) clinical nutrition experience is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in making enteral and parental recommendations and selecting appropriate formulas.
  • Demonstrated competency of patient care in adult and geriatric populations across a wide range of medical conditions in the inpatient and outpatient setting.

Responsibilities

  • Use Nutrition Care Process to assess, evaluate, and provide medical nutrition therapy and nutrition counseling for adult and geriatric inpatients and outpatients.
  • Teach dietetic students.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary teams and develop nutritional components of care.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development appropriate to the patient’s status according to age.
  • Provide quality patient care including nutrition screening, evaluation, assessment, treatment, and documentation of patient care plan appropriate for patient.
  • Educate students with on-the-job training.
  • Evaluate students.
  • Provide students with necessary support and assistance to ensure work is completed.
  • Assess nutrition status and instruct/counsel patient on appropriate diet.
  • Participate as part of the medical team concerning problems affecting patients' food habits and needs and participate in health team rounds concerning patient care.
  • Assist in the implementation of studies and short-term projects.
  • Perform special projects as assigned.
  • Participate as active member of departmental/hospital committees.
  • Review and analyze production, maintenance of standards, costs and personnel utilization records to evaluate progress of work and to control or reduce costs.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the public.
  • Assist other dietitians as needed.
