About The Position

Provide nutritional assessment and dietary management for all patients and families diagnosed with an inborn error of metabolism, either through the State of Michigan’s Newborn Screening program or through other sources and referred to the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Metabolic Management Clinic (CHMMC), within the Division of Genetic and Metabolic Disorders at Children’s Hospital of Michigan. This includes both inpatients at Children’s Hospital of Michigan and outpatients seen in the CHMMC. This includes recommending and monitoring: Dietary Intake, Diet Prescriptions, Necessary Blood Tests, and Growth and Development. The role involves providing nutrition assessment and education in the clinic setting, implementing medical nutrition therapy in the inpatient setting, providing metabolic formula preparation instructions, and providing written diet prescriptions and necessary supplies. The dietitian will calculate and evaluate diet records and labs for home monitoring, communicate with patients and families, educate house staff and other health care team members, develop and implement educational programs, and participate as a member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team. Consultations for other hospital dietitians, nursing staff, and other health care team members are also part of the role. Additionally, the dietitian will maintain metabolic formula inventory and order schedule, and produce documentation for insurance coverage. The position reports to the Director, DMC Nutrition Services and conducts nutrition assessments to determine appropriate nutrition therapy plans. This includes evaluating medical history, medications, anthropometrics, lab values, diet history, and age-specific factors, cultural practices, and barriers to learning. Nutrition Care Plans are developed based on patient needs, including nutrient requirements and education. Assessments are completed with input from a multidisciplinary team and documented using DMC approved methods. The role also involves acting as a resource for hospital personnel, participating in multidisciplinary rounds, providing education, researching and developing programs for dietetic interns, participating in research projects, working with outside agencies, maintaining policies and procedures, managing office and tube feeding supplies, monitoring foodservice personnel, formulating special recipes, promoting guest relations, and demonstrating behaviors supportive of DMC values.

Requirements

• Bachelors degree in Nutrition/Dietetics.
• Dietetic Internship in healthcare setting or completion of a supervised practice program at a health care facility, community agency, or a foodservice corporation, or combined with graduate or undergraduate studies.
• Registration with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics or registry eligible passing the registry exam within 6 months of completion of internship.
• Registration with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics required if working with patients with inherited metabolic disorders.

Responsibilities

• Conduct a nutrition assessment for all patients identified at nutritional risk.
• Develop Nutrition Care Plans specific to patients identified needs.
• Records nutrition assessment in patient records using DMC approved documentation.
• Perform as a resource person for hospital personnel and medical staff regarding nutrition.
• Participate in multidisciplinary rounds.
• Provide education to various departments on nutrition related topics.
• Research and develop programs for dietetic interns.
• Participate in the education of dietetic interns.
• Participate in research projects and nutrition related programs.
• Work with outside agencies in obtaining ongoing assistance for patients.

• Monitor and direct foodservice personnel to ensure provisions of optimal nutritional food service to patients.

• Formulate special recipes or plans to meet the specific needs of patients.
• Promote guest relations and provide customer service.
• Promote the value of the DMC by demonstrating supportive behaviors.
