About The Position

Provides care to one or more of the following patient populations: Provides Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) or Diabetes Self-Management Education/Training (DSMT) to patients where an advanced credential is a department requirement. Provides Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) to patients supported by California Children’s Services. Exercises sound judgment and developed clinical skills to implement the patient's plan of care based on the diagnosis in a timely manner. Gains confidence and cooperation from the patient, their family/support group, and other healthcare providers through competent patient assessment, attentive monitoring and care, and effective communication. Adheres to all local/state/federal regulations, codes, policies, and procedures to ensure privacy and safety while delivering optimal patient care.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited degree program and a supervised practice program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics
  • RD-Registered Dietitian/RDN-Registered Dietitian Nutritionist
  • 5 years recent relevant experience
  • Utilizes advanced nutrition and/or diabetes education knowledge and skills in the treatment of patients with varying medical conditions in the areas of expertise required by the department.
  • Provides complex care using a strong understanding of human anatomy, pathophysiology, pharmacology, laboratory results, and medical terminology.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills to explain sensitive information clearly and professionally to diverse audiences, including non-medical people.
  • Well-developed time management and organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize assignments and work within standardized operating procedures to achieve objectives and meet deadlines.
  • General knowledge of computer applications, such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) and electronic health records (EHR).
  • Ability to interpret a variety of data and instructions, furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to prioritize assignments and work within standardized policies and procedures, to achieve objectives and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work autonomously, as well as part of the team, including accomplishing multiple tasks in an environment with interruptions.
  • Ability to identify, evaluate, and resolve standard problems by selecting appropriate solutions from established options.
  • Ability to ensure the privacy of each patient's protected health information (PHI).
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with peers and other healthcare providers to achieve departmental and corporate goals.

Responsibilities

  • Adheres to department policies and procedures, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics/Commission on Dietetic Registration Code of Ethics, and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Scope and Standards of Practice.
  • May provide Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) utilizing the nutrition care process including nutrition screening, assessment, reassessment and education/counseling.
  • May deliver Diabetes Self-Management Education/Training (DSM/T).
  • May provide case management including obtaining insurance authorization for services and supplies, pending orders for supplies and submitting orders for medical foods and durable medical equipment.
  • May participate in interdisciplinary rounds, case conferences, team conferences and/or family meetings.
  • May provide nutrition information for health professionals and the community.
  • May provide advanced training and education in area of expertise to staff and physicians.
  • May precept dietetic interns.
  • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team, referring to other team members as needed to optimize care.
  • Ensures that routine and priority tasks are completed within established departmental time frames.
  • Performs general clerical tasks, such as answering phones; updating patient appointments; or retrieving, entering, and revising patient electronic health records (EHR).
  • Documents in the EHR all patient care provided.
  • Maintains a clean, neat, and safe working environment.
  • Reports safety concerns to supervisor promptly.
  • Protects self and others by adhering to infection prevention policies and procedures.
  • Maintains strictest confidence of all protected health information (PHI) and protects all PHI from accidental, intentional, or inappropriate disclosure.
  • Provides quality care in compliance with department standards, policies, and procedures, as well as local, state, and federal regulatory agencies to deliver the highest level of patient privacy and care.
  • Maintains RD/RDN registration and completes mandated continuing education requirements to meet facility and regulatory agencies accreditation requirements.
  • Participates in department Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement and patient satisfaction activities.
  • Demonstrates compliance with other department and organization requirements and responsibilities.
