About The Position

The Department of Public Health/Tewksbury Hospital is looking for professional and dedicated Registered Nurse III’s. The RN III’s perform in a permanent charge position on the Patient Care Units. They provide primary nursing care to adult patients; establishes nursing plan of approach; participates as a member of the interdisciplinary team; assess health care and educational needs of patients and their families. Assists in admissions and discharges.

Requirements

  • Willingness to work with emotionally disturbed, mentally or physically handicapped.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate through oral and written reporting to providers, other nursing personnel, and members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Ability to remain calm, make decisions, and act quickly in stressful and/or emergency situations.
  • Ability to establish a rapport and deal tactfully with persons from varied ethnic, cultural and/or socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Capacity to coordinate the efforts of others in accomplishing work objectives.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision.
  • Knowledge of the methods used in employee performance reviews.
  • Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
  • Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.
  • Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
  • At least (A) one year of full-time or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility.
  • Six months of which must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity.

Responsibilities

  • Provides Nursing Care for patients by following professional hospital and departmental standards in order to maintain quality care.
  • Identifies and addresses patient needs by performing nursing assessments, developing nursing interventions and participating in team meetings to facilitate discharge.
  • Assumes charge nurse responsibility on a daily basis to provide continuity of care.
  • Collaborates with Nurse Manager in supervision and evaluation of personnel.
  • Supervises employees of a lesser grade by assigning tasks, based on individual competencies, evaluating performance and making recommendations concerning performance to maintain a high level of quality care.
  • Provides instruction to other nursing staff by example and explanation to ensure quality services and to maintain professional standards of nursing.
  • Facilitates the implementation of treatment plans by interdisciplinary team by conferring with appropriate health care professional in order to meet the stated goal for each patient.
  • Admits, transfers and discharges patients, coordinating health care services to ensure continuity of care following standards established by hospital policy.
  • Identifies, evaluates and responds to changes in patient conditions, documenting and reporting such changes to appropriate person to ensure prompt response to patient needs.
  • Participates in inter-shift reports, meetings and nursing rounds at the beginning and end of each shift to assess health care status, outcomes of nursing care, appropriateness of nursing interventions, patient’s response to treatment, patient’s satisfaction, completion of unit assignments and adherence to environmental safety/infection control policies/procedures.
  • Collaborates with patient’s interdisciplinary team in multidisciplinary meetings and rounds to communicate pertinent patient care information with other health care professional and to integrate appropriate information in the nursing process and administrative aspects of care so that quality care is provided consistent with multidisciplinary plan and standards for patient advocacy/care.
  • Assures that education and training needs of patient/patients' families are assessed and identified so that pt./pts’ families gain the knowledge and skills that will improve pt. health care outcomes and meet the ongoing health care needs of the pt./pts’ family.
  • Observes interactions between patients and personnel to supervise nursing intervention and monitors and reviews documentation of nursing process to determine conformity to standards of professional practice, Nursing Department policies/procedures and governmental rules/regulations.
  • Functions as a mentor to advance clinical, educational and professional development of supervised staff through clinical assignments, continuing education/staff development programs and committee membership/participation and by fostering an educational environment that develops staff to their highest potential for performing in the clinical setting.
  • Cooperates and collaborates with the Nurse Manager in unit-based Performance Improvement to formulate a unit-based P.I. Plan which addresses, aspects of care as per department P.I. plan and identifies opportunities/priority issues for evaluation and improvement in care.
  • Directs and assists staff in P.I. Process by providing assistance with data collection and analysis, identifying opportunities to evaluate and improve care, participating in assessment of findings and corrective action taken to improve care, and assessing and maintaining the effect of improvement activity.
  • Collaborates with Nurse Manager and Staff Development to develop an orientation program which conforms to individualized needs of orientees and meets competency requirements.
  • Assumes responsibility for personal development/competency to maintain knowledge and skills current with research findings, licensure, CPR and knowledge and skills required to perform processes involved in delivery of care specific to clinical unit and field, participates in professional organizations to provide direction for nursing and health care issues.
  • Demonstrates competence in assessing and providing age-appropriate care to all clients.
  • Demonstrates competence in assessing and providing care that is cognizant of and sensitive to patients’ cultural and spiritual needs.
