The Clinical Associate performs clinical and clerical support, providing basic technical clinical services and clerical support in the delivery of quality patient care as directed by licensed staff, physician, or mid-level practitioner. They perform basic clinical services relating to the care, cleanliness, safety, and comfort of patients. The Clinical Associate may be approved for phlebotomy tasks with proper certification, department need, and leadership consent. This role is for a 12-bed ICU specializing in the care of non-traumatic brain injuries and other diagnoses including Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Stroke, Seizure Disorders, Brain Tumor/Cancer, and Neuromuscular Conditions. The unit also serves as the alternative unit for neurosurgery patients. This position is FLEX, working the day shift with every other weekend and rotating holidays. The Clinical Associate will also be required to perform other department/unit specific tasks. They will exhibit competent knowledge of EMR and assist with chart audits, review medical records and provider orders, update demographics and insurances, answer phones, schedule appointments, receive/relay messages, and input refill requests. They will assist with referrals, authorizations, and pre-authorization as directed. They will order department/unit supplies and equipment, and stock/organize supplies. They collect patient assessment data including height, weight, vital signs, chief complaint/symptoms, and current medications for assessment by licensed staff. They process equipment between patients, operate and maintain general office equipment, and monitor cleanliness of waiting and break rooms, performing safety/environmental rounds. They transport patients and assist with maintaining regulatory compliance. They provide basic nursing care and perform advanced technical skills according to established standards. They act as clerical support, receptionist, and unit resource. On monitored units, they function as a nursing assistant and a monitor technician. Clinical Associates assigned to Clinical Transport provide basic patient care and function as a monitor technician. On non-Monitored units, they may be approved for de-centralized phlebotomy or removal of femoral arterial sheaths and nursing assistant duties based on patient population and VP consent. They provide support for department/unit staff scheduling. They may review medical records for outstanding orders and notify the nurse of stat orders and medication changes. As competencies are appropriate, they will manage admissions, transfers, and discharges, and coordinate patient flow. They schedule patient therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, welcome and assist patients and visitors, and assist with registration. They serve as the “face” of the unit, adhering to dress code and exhibiting service excellence behaviors. They demonstrate excellent telephone etiquette and interpersonal skills. They receive and screen incoming calls, route calls, and take messages accurately. They serve as a resource for department/unit software systems. Clinical Associates in Clinical Transport may monitor and interpret EKG rhythms and utilize the transportation algorithm. They observe epilepsy monitoring video and report specific events. Competencies appropriate for phlebotomy include obtaining blood specimens and processing specimens for delivery to the laboratory.
