About The Position

This job supports Mercy’s philosophy of patient centered care by presenting excellent customer service and enables the facilitation of positive patient outcomes by providing nursing support to a Mercy provider. The role involves supporting the Mercy Cardiology Clinic with patient care, clinical support, communication, coordination, documentation, and facility/equipment maintenance. The RN will act as a liaison between providers and patients, manage patient information, and ensure efficient clinic operations.

Requirements

  • Currently licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Iowa or compact state required.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), in accordance with the American Heart Association required.
  • Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse & Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills, computer skills, organization, time management, attention to detail and the ability to remain poised and efficient in a fast-paced environment.
  • Education sufficient to obtain required licensure.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in a medical office setting is preferred.
  • ACLS required within 6 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Triages patients either in person or on telephone.
  • Schedules appointments, answers questions and/or determines the need for provider intervention.
  • Supports the practice and acts as a liaison between the providers and patients.
  • Manages phone calls to patients regarding test/lab results and provides appropriate instruction for treatment, as directed by the providers.
  • Processes medication requests/changes/refills per established protocols.
  • Meets requirements for handling and disposing of bio-hazardous waste.
  • Provides patient education as needed for the scheduled test/procedures.
  • Provides assistance with diagnostic procedures and treatments as directed by the provider.
  • Effectively documents within the electronic health record.
  • Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.
  • Greet, room, and prepare patients for exams (vitals, history, symptoms, medications).
  • Assist with or perform phlebotomy and specimen collection (e.g., glucose testing, point of care INR, etc.) as ordered.
  • Conduct EKGs, manual blood pressure measurements, and other diagnostic procedures as directed and according to established clinic protocols.
  • Demonstrates competency in IV insertion and port access.
  • Administer medications/injections and perform wound care, IV insertion, and infusaport access per established protocols.
  • Operates and demonstrates knowledge of equipment: EKG management system, Holter/telemetry monitors, specialized IV pumps, glucometers, OmniCell, etc.
  • Provides cross-coverage for infusion and other assigned areas.
  • Provide patient education on diagnoses, procedures, medications, and treatments.
  • Monitor and respond to changes in patient condition; perform emergency response within scope.
  • Completes discharge of patient from exam rooms.
  • Manage appointment scheduling, follow-ups, referrals, and lab/test result calls.
  • Coordinates procedural scheduling and communication among staff, physicians, and patients (ie: cardiac catheterizations, interventions, TEEs, Cardioversions, electrophysiology procedures, and other advanced cardiac testing/procedures).
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, providers, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Track and preauthorize procedures and specialty medications with insurers.
  • Collaborate with providers and interdisciplinary teams to ensure proper handoffs and continuity of care.
  • Works as a team member to support clinic operations and patient care coordination.
  • Attend departmental meetings and participate in special projects as assigned.
  • Accurately document care in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Document all care activities, interventions, and patient responses with accuracy and timeliness.
  • Manage intake questionnaires and discharge instructions.
  • Stock, clean, and disinfect exam rooms and equipment (e.g., tables, BP cuffs, glucometers).
  • Maintains equipment and can troubleshoot issues that arise.
  • Perform department-specific cleaning and compliance audits (daily/weekly/monthly).
  • Follow infection control and safety protocols.
  • Identify and support quality improvement opportunities.
  • Practice cost containment through efficient use of time and resources.
  • Follow all safety guidelines and report incidents promptly.
