About The Position

MercyOne is seeking a Clinic Medical Assistant for the Forest Park Clinic. This role provides support in the medical field by performing various medical and clerical activities to ensure quality care and an efficient workplace. The Medical Assistant will escort patients to exam rooms, obtain and document patient data including chief complaint, allergies, vital signs, pain level, medication history, and fall risk. They will also obtain and review basic health history, prepare exam rooms with necessary equipment and supplies, and assist with exams and procedures. The role involves utilizing Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa policies and procedures, performing lab/diagnostic tests, reporting critical lab values, and maintaining quality controls. Additionally, the Medical Assistant will assist in scheduling appointments, tests, and referrals, reviewing test preparation handouts, and completing charge tickets. They will administer medications safely, document administration, and maintain competency in various medication routes. The role also includes documenting and following up on phone messages under provider supervision.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an approved school for medical assistant required.
  • Credentialed as a medical assistant is required (CMA, RMA, NCMA).
  • CCMA certification is accepted with successful completion of a training program.

Nice To Haves

  • A minimum of six months work experience in a health care facility performing duties relating to patient care is preferred.
  • Additional experience involving computer knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support in the medical field by performing various medical and clerical activities to assure quality care and a more efficient work place.
  • Escort patient to exam room.
  • Obtain and document data to include but not limited to chief complaint, allergies, vital signs, pain level, medication history, and fall risk.
  • Obtain and review basic health history information.
  • Anticipate and prepare exam room with equipment and supplies required for the visit.
  • Assist with exams/procedures as requested.
  • Utilize written Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa policies/procedures and universal precautions when performing lab/diagnostic tests or procedures.
  • Report and document all critical lab/diagnostic test values to provider.
  • Perform, maintain and document quality controls as applicable/requested, i.e., logs, proficiency tests, maintenance records, etc.
  • Assist in scheduling patients for office appointments, lab/diagnostic tests/referrals.
  • Review written test preparation handout with patient and document in medical record.
  • Refer patient to provider/registered nurse if patient education is required.
  • Complete charge ticket/submit charges in electronic health record to include and obtain the diagnosis from the provider, identifying and initialing all billable supplies and services.
  • Obtain ABN per e-LMRP as necessary.
  • Utilize proper procedure for administering medications with emphasis on patient safety.
  • Document administration of medications.
  • Maintain competency in administering medications via the following routes: IM, SQ, ID, oral, inhalation, ocular, optic, topical, sublingual, and nasal.
  • Document notification/follow-up of phone messages under direct supervision of a provider.
