About The Position

This role is responsible for nursing care under the supervision of physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners. The position involves obtaining, verifying, and recording patient health history, gathering pertinent health data through physical assessments, and rooming patients. The Medical Assistant will provide basic patient care as ordered by providers, administer medications (including subcutaneous or intramuscular injections), and assist providers in exams, procedures, and treatments. Adherence to infection control and safety guidelines, including cleaning exam rooms, sterilizing equipment, and using germicides, is crucial. Accurate documentation of assessments, interventions, medications, and test results in the medical record is required. The role includes observing patients, reporting adverse reactions, and potentially performing phlebotomy duties. Patient education on self-administered medications and promoting wellness through patient education materials and communication of physician advice are key responsibilities. Ordering, sorting, and storing supplies, restocking exam rooms, and answering patient telephone calls and messages are also part of the role. The Medical Assistant will accurately relay prescription information to pharmacies and fulfill clerical responsibilities such as managing patient medical records, obtaining necessary referral information, and completing forms for pre-certifications and pre-authorizations. Ensuring patient confidentiality and following HIPAA guidelines is mandatory. The role also involves checking and resolving assigned tasks in the EMR program, assisting co-workers, maintaining a neat and stocked work area, being productive during downtime, maintaining emotional control and diplomacy, fostering open communication, adhering to company policies, and demonstrating efficient use of equipment and supplies.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology.
  • Familiarity with health care systems, regulations, policies and functions.
  • Understanding of documentation standards.
  • Knowledge of equipment, supplies and materials needed for medical treatment.
  • Understanding of basic laboratory procedures including preparation and screening.
  • Knowledge of infectious disease management and control and safety standards.
  • Skill in reading and following written and oral medical orders.
  • Skill in initiating appropriate emergency procedures.
  • Skill in handling a number of tasks simultaneously.
  • Skill in computers.
  • Type at least 40 WPM.
  • Ability to use manual dexterity to perform medical treatments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and diverse patient populations.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations for drug dosages.
  • Current Medical Assistant certification.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain, verify and record health history of patients.

  • Accurately and completely document assessments, interventions, patient/family responses, medications dispensed/prescribed and test results in medical record.
  • Observe patients and report adverse reactions to medication or treatment to medical personnel in charge.
  • May be required to perform phlebotomy duties.
  • Educate and instruct patients about self-administered medications.
  • Promote wellness by providing patient education materials, communicating physician advice/instructions.
  • Order, sort and store supplies and restock exam rooms.
  • Answer telephone calls and messages from patients to include relaying instructions to patients or family member and provide pertinent information.
  • Accurately relay prescription information to pharmacies.
  • Fulfill clerical responsibilities as assigned which may include sending or receiving patient medical records; obtaining lab, x-ray, hospital notes, referral information, etc.; completing forms for pre-certifications and/or pre-authorization for medication and/or procedures.
  • Ensure patient confidentiality and follow HIPAA guidelines.
  • Check and resolve assigned tasks in EMR program.
  • Assist co-workers as needed.
  • Responsible for neatness of work area to include stocking and cleaning.
  • Be productive when faced with any “down time” during work hours.
  • Maintain emotional control and diplomacy at all times.
