About The Position

The Animal Care Technician is responsible for providing appropriate animal handling and care within the work environment in a manner that aligns with fear free training and AVHS policies. This is a Non-Exempt (Hourly) position with a pay range of $17.25 – $19.00. The role is located at the Northwest Spay Neuter Center in Tacoma, WA.

Requirements

  • Passion for the mission of Auburn Valley Humane Society.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to animal welfare issues.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening and background check.
  • Ability to communicate skillfully and effectively with diverse staff, volunteers, and community in a professional, pleasant, respectful, and courteous manner.
  • Ability to handle and assess potentially dangerous or fractious dogs and cats.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow instructions, verbal and written, in repetitious tasks and one-off situations.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with a diverse staff in a positive, friendly, collaborative, and inclusive manner.
  • Comfortable learning new systems, including online information systems and shelter software.
  • Individuals will frequently be required to speak publicly; stand, walk or sit for extended periods, reach, bend or stoop, regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Able to work flexible hours, which will include weekends and some evenings.
  • This position works daily in animal setting.
  • This position will come in direct contact with animals and will be exposed to animal related smells and sounds.

Responsibilities

  • Learn and follow AVHS’s policies and procedures and city, county and state requirements in regard to animal welfare.
  • Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with staff members, volunteers, and other departments.
  • Act in a manner consistent with Fear Free and similar animal handling practices.
  • Provide daily care of animals in the facility including: feeding, bathing, hygiene, exercise, behavior support.
  • Maintain animal and facility physical spaces in a manner following disease control protocol to ensure a safe and healthy environment including but not limited to cleaning and laundry.
  • Assist in the examination of incoming animals.
  • Assist in initial health tests, vaccinations, and treatment for parasites.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies.
  • Monitor animals as advised by medical staff and communicate in the best interest of the animal.
  • Perform other reasonable duties time to time, as assigned.
  • Maintain a general working knowledge of other departments, locations, functions, and their contribution to the organization as a whole.
  • Remain current on daily communication and time sensitive issues.
