About The Position

The Port of San Diego is seeking a Climate and Sustainability Analyst I to join its Climate and Sustainability Department. This role supports key initiatives like the Port’s Climate Action Plan and Maritime Clean Air Strategy. The position involves accounting for greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions, implementing energy and resource conservation programs, analyzing performance data, and providing information to internal departments, tenants, and the public. This is an entry-level position within the Climate and Sustainability Analyst series, initially requiring close supervision and learning routine environmental survey assignments. As experience is gained, assignments will become more complex, with less direct supervision. The Analyst I is expected to perform duties in a learning capacity, with the potential for progression to Climate and Sustainability Analyst II.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in environmental, biological, physical, chemical, or earth science, or a related field.
  • No experience required for Climate and Sustainability Analyst I.
  • Understanding, interpreting, applying, and explaining all pertinent laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures, and standards relevant to work performed.
  • Assisting in the development of plans, specifications, and contracts for environmental conservation programs, investigations, and compliance enforcements.
  • Monitoring and tracking endangered species lists, conducting natural resource assessments, and monitoring natural resources.
  • Reviewing climate and sustainability projects to ensure work has been performed within the scope of work, specifications, and contracts.
  • Preparing clear and concise reports, correspondence, documentation, and other written materials.
  • Collecting, evaluating, and interpreting appropriate and applicable data including policies and legislation.
  • Effectively representing the department and the Port in meetings with governmental agencies, community groups, various business, professional, and regulatory organizations, and in meetings with individuals.
  • Using tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy and procedural guidelines.
  • Independently organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines, and following up on assignments.
  • Effectively using computer systems, software applications relevant to work performed, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks.
  • Communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, using appropriate English grammar and syntax.

  • Climate and Sustainability Analyst II: Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience involving analysis, planning, and/or implementation of professional environmental-related program assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Collecting and analyzing utility and fuel consumption data, waste management metrics, water use, and key performance indicators to track progress towards established goals.
  • Preparing reports on annual performance and achievements.
  • Assisting in conducting energy, fuel, water, and waste audits to determine opportunities for energy efficiency and resource reduction.
  • Supporting implementation of energy, fuel, and/or water conservation measures, procurement of renewable energy, and diverting waste from local landfills.
  • Assisting with local, state, and federal energy and environmental regulations.
  • Working closely with internal departments and stakeholders to ensure sustainability projects, policies, and initiatives are integrated into operations and culture.
  • Collaborating with Port tenants, the Green Business Network, and the public to promote sustainability best practices.
  • Staying informed on industry best practices and emerging technologies, and providing recommendations for potential adoption.
  • Performing environmental field investigative and compliance work, conducting site assessments, field investigations, field sampling, and other environmental survey clean-up/mitigation activities.
  • Conducting tenant environmental compliance investigations; collecting, gathering data, analyzing, summarizing findings in a report, and communicating findings of environmental compliance or concerns.
  • Participating in the coordination of public environmental committees; monitoring and tracking endangered species list; conducting natural resource assessments and monitoring natural resources.
  • Coordinating the delivery of information and providing technical assistance to other departments, tenants, agencies, and organizations; responding to routine to moderately complex environmental inquiries from representatives of different Port divisions and/or departments and tenants.
  • Educating and informing Port staff, contractors, and tenants about regulations, rules, policies, processes, and procedures related to areas of responsibility; responding to requests for information regarding specific environmental activities; cooperating with and providing information to responsible enforcement agencies and other governmental agencies; representing the department in meetings with internal and outside agencies regarding program issues.
  • Developing, writing, and maintaining environmental reports, documents, correspondence, and records related to environmental compliance investigations; developing technical reports and correspondence for various departments at the Port of San Diego, Port tenants, and state and federal regulatory agencies.
  • Participating in developing and administering consultant and contractor contracts and budgets related to assigned areas of specialty; participating in coordinating and overseeing work of consultants to ensure contract terms are met; participating in monitoring work programs and schedules to ensure timely project completion; participating in reviewing invoices and identifying discrepancies.
  • Providing technical assistance to interns or temporary staff, as needed.
  • Performing assigned disaster service worker responsibilities, as directed.
  • Observing and complying with all Port and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
