About The Position

Applications are being accepted beginning Friday, August 21, 2026, through 4:30 pm, Friday, September 4, 2026. This position may be required to work nights or graveyard shifts, weekends, holidays, and occasionally flex hours. Under supervision, Clerk performs increasingly difficult and responsible clerical duties. This includes typing forms, memos and correspondence; establishing and maintaining alpha, numeric and chronological files; operating office machines; making mathematical computations; interpreting and applying departmental policies and procedures; acting as receptionist by screening calls, receiving visitors and providing answers to inquiries; opening and distributing mail; interfacing with other departments, the public, vendors, and outside agencies in person or by telephone; collecting, dispersing, depositing, and balancing monies; creating charts, graphs and forms; taking inventory. May compose correspondence, write desk manuals, compile information, and prepare reports. May assist with interviewing, hiring, evaluating, or disciplining subordinates, and may train and assign subordinates. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Keyboarding Skill Certificate from an approved government, employment, or training agency recognized by the Civil Service department and obtained within the last 12 months displaying ability to type at a minimum net speed of 40 wpm (proof required).
  • The Human Resources Department continues to accept and receive a 5-minute keyboarding skills certificate obtained online during the past 12 months.
  • Positions in the Police Department require the ability to pass a thorough background investigation.
  • Ability to file alphabetically and numerically.
  • Ability to perform simple mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to correct errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Ability to deal courteously with the public, both in person and on the telephone.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to type accurately on a personal computer at a minimum net speed of 30 wpm.
  • Ability to understand law enforcement practices and basic operations of police record functions, police procedures, rules, regulations, terminology and law enforcement codes.
  • Understanding of the processes related to the release of data and reports to the public and other agencies.

Nice To Haves

  • The ability to interpret the Rules and Regulations of the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and the California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS) is desired for positions in the Records Division.
  • Bilingual/biliterate skills (Spanish, Khmer, or Tagalog) is desired for some positions.
