About The Position

The law clerk will be part of Definity’s Claims Litigation Unit and responsible for litigation clerking duties in that department. The successful candidate will work under lawyers’ direction and guidance and will assist with tasks as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a law clerk as part of a team practicing insurance litigation in Ontario or personal injury experience.
  • Knowledge of the Rules of Civil Procedure and License Appeal Tribunal.
  • Strong document management skills with the ability to learn and utilize Definity’s various software programs such as TeamConnect and ACL.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Outlook and all MS Office applications.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize and execute tasks in a quality manner with strong turnaround time.
  • High degree of personal ethics, integrity and responsibility with an ability to deal with sensitive issues and safeguard privileged and confidential information.
  • Great attention to detail with proof reading skills.
  • Ability to perform under pressure, meet deadlines and handle multiple, yet sometimes conflicting priorities.
  • Team player, adaptable to a changing environment.
  • Ability to work in a paperless environment.
  • High degree of proficiency with English required to service customers, both internal to the company and external, across Canada.

Responsibilities

  • General file handling and practice management for civil litigation matters.
  • Identifying and requesting documentation from client, counsel, or other parties.
  • Management of all productions and undertakings, including organizing, indexing, etc.
  • Review of documentation and preparation of summaries.
  • Preparation of Affidavits of Documents.
  • Preparation of pleadings.
  • Drafting correspondence to clients, counsel, third parties, experts, etc.
  • All aspects or arranging defense medical examinations including retaining experts and preparing medical briefs.
  • All aspects of arranging surveillance.
  • Preparation of motion materials.
  • Providing input into the procedures and practices.
  • Preparing materials for trials and/or hearings.
  • Working within a paperless environment.
  • Performance other duties as required of a law clerk
