About The Position

Works cooperatively with the lead teacher to support implementation of daily plans in accordance with the current curriculum. Performs activities that ensure the safety, involvement, and creativity of each individual in the group. The assistant helps maintain a safe, clean learning environment and supports children’s well-being, supervision, and participation in classroom and group activities. Must attend training and professional development classes as requested by Weatherford Public Schools.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• In addition to the high school diploma or equivalent, meet one of these options: hold an associate’s degree or higher; complete at least two years (48 credit hours) of study at an institution of higher education; pass the Oklahoma General Education (OGET) Test; or pass the Praxis ParaProfessional Assessment Test provided by WPS.
• Possess personal attributes needed to develop trusting relationships with children and adults, including genuine warmth and concern for children and an understanding of their developmental needs.
• Respect children’s ideas, feelings, abilities, and differences.
• Ability to assume needed duties and responsibilities without supervision.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to abide by all rules and regulations.
• Ability to demonstrate professionalism at all times.

Responsibilities

• Assist the teacher in planning and maintaining a safe, clean learning environment and ensuring the well-being and safety of children in their care.
• Show a genuine nurturing and caring attitude toward all children.
• Plan with the teacher and help prepare materials and supplies in advance for activities.
• Assist the teacher in maintaining discipline and supervising children during all activities.
• Assist teachers with small- and large-group activities.
• Supervise daily lunch and playground activities, field trips, and walks.
• Perform other tasks deemed necessary by the teacher and/or principal.
• Attend training and professional development classes as requested by Weatherford Public Schools.
