Classroom Support / Afterschool Teacher Position
About The Position
Brooklyn Heights Montessori School (BHMS) is seeking to fill roles for an Early Childhood Support + Lunch/Recess/Afterschool Teacher (Mornings as needed + noon-5pm daily) and an Afterschool Teacher (2:45-6pm, daily) with additional substitute hours available on an as-needed basis. These positions start in September 2026. The roles involve supervising classrooms during lunch and recess, transitioning students, supporting classroom teachers, monitoring hallways during dismissal, caring for outdoor spaces, facilitating games and activities during after-school play, and reinforcing social skills. Requirements
- Ability to work with children age 3-12
- Ability to manage group sizes up to 20
- Ability to plan and execute group activities, games and play
- Sense of humor and love of young children
- Willingness to learn and use principles of Positive Discipline and Montessori philosophy
- Ability to collaborate with a partner and within a team
- Ability to clearly and promptly communicate by phone, email, and walkie-talkie
- Flexibility to accommodate changes in schedule or location of activities
- Professionalism in presence, performance, and behavior
- 3+ years of experience with Pre-K through elementary age children
- Must be eligible to work in the U.S.
Nice To Haves
- Bachelor's Degree preferred
- Knowledge or training in Montessori preferred
Responsibilities
- Supervise one early childhood or elementary classroom during lunch
- Supervise one early childhood or elementary classroom on the playground during recess
- Transition students between lunch and recess spaces
- Support classroom teachers with care of the classroom
- Monitor hallway spaces during dismissal
- Care for outdoor spaces and recess equipment
- Transition students to after-school enrichment classes
- Facilitate games and safe play during after-school outdoor play
- Facilitate games and activities during after-school indoor play
- Maintain a rotation of engaging toys and activities for indoor play
- Model, teach, and reinforce social skills and self-regulation skills
Benefits
- Compensation of $25/hour
- Additional substitute teacher hours up to a total of 30 hours per week are available on an as-needed basis.
