About The Position

In collaboration with the classroom team, the Classroom Behavior Specialist is responsible for assisting the Special Education Teacher with the implementation of effective academic and social-emotional programming for assigned students. This role involves supporting students in a psychiatric setting and requires the ability to manage challenging behaviors while ensuring a safe and therapeutic environment.

Requirements

  • Baccalaureate Degree preferred with a major in education or related human service fields.
  • Basic knowledge of data entry/management programs such as Excel. (Excel training will be provided for those without this background upon hire).
  • Bradley Hospital Safety Care Certification.
  • Ability to remain calm during a crisis situation as evidenced by the ability to make quick rational decisions and prioritize immediate student care needs to maintain a therapeutic environment and ensure safety.
  • Ability to participate in the physical management of students which can include, but is not limited to, awareness and demonstration of safe body positioning at all times, awareness and coordination to block and deflect possible aggression, and the ability to physically hold struggling students, using approved methods only, to maintain safety for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift up to fifty pounds.
  • Must be able to reach with their hands and arms.
  • Must be able to grasp and hold with their hands.
  • Must be able to bend/squat/kneel without limitation.
  • Must be able to physically escort students who may become combative for short distances.
  • Position requires occasional running for short distances, and frequent standing, walking, and sitting.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience working with children is helpful.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the formulation of social-emotional and behavioral programming consistent with students’ IEPs.
  • Implements social-emotional and behavioral programming consistent with students’ IEPs, which may include assisting students with activities of daily life such as toileting and other forms of self-care.
  • Collects and manages data on social-emotional and behavioral functioning for assigned students.
  • Prepares and presents verbal and/or written reports concerning social-emotional and behavioral functioning for assigned students.
  • Assists in implementation of the academic and social-emotional curricula as directed by the classroom teacher and team leader.
  • Provides academic support to students as directed by the classroom teacher.
  • Prepares and submits required paperwork for the student record.
  • Attends and participates in classroom team meetings and other student-related meetings as assigned.
  • Attends and participates in supervisory sessions, staff meetings or other meetings as assigned.
  • Observes all Bradley Schools policies, rules and regulations.
  • Performs other duties as required, assigned, or directed.
