About The Position

This position is a community service work-study position off campus and is paid at $15/hour. Literacy Pittsburgh invites intern applicants for the Fall 2026 semester. Interns at Literacy Pittsburgh support the agency mission of “Better Lives Through Learning” by serving students with goals of improving their English, reading, writing, and math skills. Interns make a meaningful impact while building professional skills as they work with a diverse range of adult students and colleagues, develop lesson plans and materials, and gain instructional experience through one-on-one and small-group instruction.

Requirements

  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.
  • Must be currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Literacy Pittsburgh’s values.
  • Attends training provided by Literacy Pittsburgh.

Nice To Haves

  • Past experience with teaching and/or working with diverse populations.

Responsibilities

  • Teach, tutor, or serve as a classroom aide for students from our English Language Learning (ELL), adult basic education (reading, writing, and math), and/or GED/High School Equivalency (HSE) programs.
  • Lesson planning/prep.
  • Administrative tasks (e.g., reporting on attendance and student progress).
  • Completing training/professional development related to the role.
  • May choose a focus area in addition to teaching, planning, and administrative duties in alignment with agency needs and individual interests.
  • Work with the manager of our intern program to work out the details of the internship including the specific schedule and responsibilities.
