About The Position

Interstate Waste Services (IWS) is seeking a Class A Tractor Trailer Truck Driver for its Shelton, CT facility. IWS is a leading provider of solid waste and recycling services in the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut markets, with a commitment to safety and innovation. This role involves operating tractor trailers to transport municipal and commercial waste containers between local transfer stations and rail yards. The position is full-time, year-round, with competitive pay and comprehensive union benefits. Drivers will be home nightly, working Monday through Friday with occasional Saturday work, averaging 55-60 hours per week.

Requirements

At least 21 years of age and legally eligible to work in the United States.
Valid Class A CDL with air brake endorsement.
Clean driving record.
At least 1 year of experience operating a vehicle requiring a CDL-A within the last 7 years.
Working knowledge of DOT, OSHA and applicable traffic regulations.
Ability to speak and read English well enough to converse with the general public, understand highway traffic and signals, respond to official questions, and make legible entries on reports and records.
Ability to read and understand a map.
Ability to meet the physical and safety requirements of the position.
Willingness and ability to work required hours, which may include weekends, nights, and holidays, as allowed under DOT regulation.

Nice To Haves

Experience as a Driver or Helper for a refuge company is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

Safely operate the truck in compliance with IWS’s safety standards, OSHA and DOT regulations, and local traffic laws.
Ensure that the container and its content are always secure, which may require climbing onto containers and/or reaching overhead to check tarps and ties.
Perform pre- and post-route inspections of the assigned truck and document any safety issues on standard reports.
Continuously monitor for safety and service-related issues, as well as containers or other equipment in need of repair, and report any issues to the Route Supervisor or Dispatch.
Be responsible and accountable for the safety of oneself, colleagues, trucks, and other equipment and property.
Immediately notify Route Supervisor or Dispatch of any incidents, accidents, injuries, or property damage.
Communicate professionally with customers and Dispatchers at all times, responding courteously and respectfully to complaints about schedules and quality of service, and reporting such complaints.
